Things I'm looking Foward to in 2015

Whether I know they are coming out or things I hope are coming out. Plus a few things that are worrying that are coming up.

A year of Comics I read in 2014

Same rules as before and this year I'm adding action figures to the list because I reviewed so many of them in 2014. That being the case let's get that out of the way first.

DCs' Many Cancelled Titles

Some are to be expected while others are a shock. But this many series at once are ending? Something is up.

Infinity Man and the Forever People #9
Aquaman And The Others #11
Klarion #6
Secret Origins #11
Star-Spangled War Stories Featuring G.I. Zombie #8
Trinity of Sin #6
Worlds' Finest #32
Arkham Manor #6
Batwoman #40
 Green Lantern Corps #40
 Green Lantern: New Guardians #40
Red Lanterns #40
Swamp Thing #40

The GL books and Batwoman definitely raise an eyebrow. Maybe their getting new takes after the big event that will reboot certain titles?

Well tell him that you care

While I appreciate the context of the panels above it does tick me off that Bruce just suppresses how he feels after Jason comes back. Like he doesn't know how to react. At first it's denial because much like his parents he's accepted Jason died. Then after UTH happens he makes a nasty comment although Ollie knows he doesn't mean it. When someone else makes a jab--again Ollie--he gets defensive and points out the other mans' shortcomings with Roy. Then in Batwoman he's back at making hurtful comments about Jason, which is either before or after he gets Jason to join Batman INC. All these emotions he has to deal with and I keep thinking this is why I struggle with the idea of Bruce mourning Damian. Writing-wise it just seems like an attempt to try the same thing again and it can't match up. Not 20 years worth of stories which make this something that stood out. They should have just kept Damian alive in the first place.

The Ongoing canon battle in Star Wars

I don't think I have mentioned my love of Star Wars much on this site. I mostly stick to comics rather than talk about movies and tv shows. I felt the need to go over my feelings on the criticism some fans have due to the apparent ending the Expanded Universes' canon status. (Sound familiar ?)

As I've said elsewhere recently I have a fondness for the Clone Saga. I bought this for Ben Reilly and Kaine. This is the only thing tied to Spiderverse I'm getting.

Short Review: Gotham Academy #2 and #3

Holiday stuff has kept me busy which means my reviews are later than normal. That said this will be brief as I find I don't have much to say at this point. The series is still forming it's cast and plot lines.

I love the sense of history this book has. Not only are the teachers characters from Batman mythos (Aunt Harriet and Bookworm) the in universe story of the Cobblepot girl is fascinating. I want to know this schools' history as well as the characters. I have no complaints although I do worry Batgirl will show up since my opinion of her hasn't changed. This series may have the setting of Gotham but it also has more freedom than other bat books because these are (mostly) new characters. I don't know if I'll review this book in the future since at present I have little to add besides enjoying it.

Why I love Rip Hunter

I remember when Rip was in Booster Golds' second series and the negative comments I read about him. How he was such a downer, cruel for his actions in the Killing Joke issue and how could such a killjoy be related to Booster. I don't agree with any of that.

Favorite Female Character Day

Honestly it's hard to chose, like my favorite male character this is ever changing. I have favorites though and here are a few in no particular order:

  • Princess Leia
  • Starfire
  • Spider-Girl/May "Mayday" Parker
  • Storm
  • Mary Jane Watson Parker
  • Cassandra Cain
  • Ice
  • Stephanie Brown
  • Cordelia Chase (Angel)
  • Oracle/Barbara Gordon (Not the new 52 Batgirl)

Honorable mentions to Catwoman, Batwoman Kate Kane, the other BOP, the X-Women, Invisible Woman, and too many to mention. Leia was the first strong female character I ever saw and made a huge impact. All of these choices had some affect on me and I adore them all.

Star Wars The Force Awaken teaser

Scarlet Spiders #1 Preview

Ben, how I missed you! And having Kaine team up with Ben is a big plus. This could get pretty emotional. After reading the preview this mini series and the Spiderverse Team Up #3 are the only Spider books I'm getting.

R.E.B.E.L.S. #22

I'm not sure what happened but originally Starfire was supposed to be on Robinsons' Justice League book. Plans fell through and she ended up in R.E.B.E.L.S. instead. I'm not exactly thrilled with everything that was done with the character in this series. This issue however stood out because it dealt with her past, had her doing something about an injustice she saw and had one of the greatest moments with Vril Dox I've ever seen. That said it does deal with the issue of sexual abuse against women so be warned.

Starfire Statues

I did say I was doing a Starfire month in November which might not have been a good choice because of the season. Still I wanted to do something for one of my favorite characters that often gets neglected or worse. For this post I'll be showing some of the products based around her comic book design. Which means this will not include anything from the cartoon.

I've already done a review on the Mattel figure along with figures of the characters' sister and alternate reality daughter as well as the new 52 Starfire done by DC Collectibles. While I never bought it (because it's too expensive) there's also the Tonner doll.

We'll be looking over some of the statues and busts in this post.

Books I'm getting

Batman and Robin #35: You know I'm not a fan of this series because of how Tomasi handles the book. So why am I getting this? Well for a birthday present I got to choose two current comics as gifts. Honestly I couldn't think of any new books I wanted. I only chose this for three reasons: 1.) It has Jason Todd. 2.) I like the art. 3.) I want to see if Tim's still tall.

Supergirl #35: This was my first choice for my gift. I originally wanted to get it because of the Jason appearance but declined because of not liking the writers' work on another book. I hope it's a good read as I wasn't happy with the interview.

Red Hood and the Outlaws #36: Just when I think I have Lobdell figured he surprises me. I think if this was nearly any other writer this series would be getting a lot of attention. While the subject matter isn't one I'd like to explore I'm impressed with what I've seen so far.

Gotham Academy #2: I enjoyed the first issue and I'm curious to see where the plotlines go.

New Warriors #12: The last issue of Yosts' version of the team. It makes me sad to see another of my books ending. This was a good series but because it's not mainstream enough it's cancelled. I hope at the very least the team stays together and shows up as the New Warriors in other books.

Scarlet Spiders: I'm still unsure about this three part mini series. On the one hand there's Ben Reilly and Kaine. On the other it's Spiderverse. Still I'm pretty sure it's a different writer...

Spiderverse and my feelings on it thus far

I quit Marvel years ago after they ended the MC2 Spider-Girl series. It was the only thing that got me to hang around after One More Day. I recently returned to buy Scarlet Spider (Kaine Parker) trades and get the criminally underrated New Warriors by Yost. I've been iffy on Spiderverse since it's basically just an excuse to kill off different spider characters. From what I've read it doesn't matter if these version are beloved or from a cartoon series--chances are they will be brutally murdered. Some of them already have been. There are two bright spots in this however as there will be mingling of these characters and other writers will be handling mini series.

Seeing how some of my favorites have already been slaughtered for this storyline I'm not that thrilled. That said the team for Spider-Girl will be returning for a story which I want to get out of loyalty to them (plus they actually know how to write Mayday.) Maybe Scarlet Spiders since I'm a fan of Kaine and Ben...I'm not familiar with Jessica. Even so it's a little weird for someone that's been reading DC to see all these $3.99 price tags.

Speculation for SPIDER-VERSE TEAM-UP #3 ahead.

November Starfire Month?

I want to devote a month to Starfire and decided not to do it in October. I'll be doing reviews of older comics, recommended readings and maybe a essay or two. As well as looking over some products (not the cartoon series though.) Koriand'r is an awesome character and deserves more than bashing from people online. At the very least it'll be interesting to compare the changes to the character not only from the relaunch but seeing who she is by the time the old universe ended.

The Multiversity preview

I saw the picture before I saw the name of the book and while I knew it wouldn't be certain characters it made me laugh. Batman and Luthor kissing which is misleading but also kinda truth.

Reading Batman Odyssey #1

I'm realizing more and more that it's becoming impossible to review this thing. There so much to comment on and so little sense to be found. It can't even focus on one story. And for some reason Bruce has gymnastic equipment attached to his bed using it as Ra's watches. Bees have rears on their faces and Bruce really can't say enough good things about his coffee.

I'm disappointed though since I found it more boring than anything else. Not Forever Evil boring just not nearly as entertaining as I was hoping.

Red Hood and the Outlaws #35

We've gotten a flashback issue with Kori after she won her freedom and back in #34 we saw her directly facing one of the men that tormented her as a slave. Let's see where this arc takes us as it deals with drugs and horrors of the past.

Batman #414

So far Jason Todd's Robin period has mostly been quirky and showed his worthiness of the mantle. The only time he's gotten mad so far has been after finding out the truth Batman hid about his fathers' murder. Things now take a much darker turn as the series has yet another writer although this one will be the one that changes Jason's fate. Starlin takes over writing duties getting rid of the lightheartedness for much grimmer stories and a desire to remove the newest boy wonder from the series. This story sets the tone for things to come--oh and no Jason in this issue.

Possible Marvel Reads?

After a long hiatus I came back for the Scarlet Spider (Kaine) trades and New Warriors (featuring SS.) I've been thinking about getting the Scarlet Spiders mini series when I heard about Secret Wars, Rather the Mc2 characters like Darkdevil and American Dream on the artwork. I loved Spider-Girl and her world so depending on how it turns out (much like Spiderverse) I might get it.

Sometime I have to do a post about MC2 and all the Spider-Girl characters. It's a family heroic legacy done right.

Batman Odyssey?

This came up recently and I'm wondering if this is the book I should read. The sheer WTFness of it should be entertaining. I mean I enjoyed a mini series that made little to no sense about the chosen people the Guardians picked. This will be funny right?

Any happy book recommendations?

There's a book I'll be reading that's apparently soul crushing. I'm not sure if that's in a "this is so sad but written so good" way or "grim/dark for the sake of being grim/dark" yet. I just managed to miss spoilers only reading that the preview made people cry. So I need something happy to read right after that I never read before. It can be funny or just characters being happy together. I have a feeling I'll be needing a pick me up.

Blood Moon/Crisis/Booster Gold story

Whatever it's called that's supposed to have Booster, take place after Futures End/Worlds End and be on the anniversary of the crisis. The hot topic for that seems to be whether or not DC will undo the new 52. I don't think so although I can see where others get that impression. The covers with characters from the old universe and all. There are two options I see here:

  1. The old universe is now another world. This doesn't make any sense when you think about it as Barry Allen and Booster Gold both came from that world and we saw them change when that world was turned into DCnU. It might be similar though.
  2. I believe that this is the perfect chance for DC to fix some of their mistakes in new 52 but I don't think their undo everything. Just reset problem areas and include some of the history that was previously there.
I think the main trouble many are having is that the new 52 doesn't have it's sense of history, the legacies, or the closeness with the characters. That can be fixed. Increase the amount of time it took for the JLA to form. Make the TT go further back. Have the Robins spent more than months/a year being sidekicks. Show that legacy matters, that these people care about each other. That makes the stories matter and have more meaning.

Female Characters Don't Sell Action Figures?

This was an idea that's been around for awhile. That female character don't sell hence toy companies don't go out of their way to make them into toys. More female characters get made nowadays but not on scale that male characters do. Usually one in a wave (if at all) or in gift packs especially at retail.

Why Bat family Conflicts don't work

This has come up a lot in the new 52 and besides the trope being overdone there's another reason it doesn't work. The writers drop the plot to move onto the next screw up Bruce does to piss them off. Nothing ever gets properly resolved showing there was never a story to begin with. First we have DOTF which few writers wanted to touch to begin with and usually had members of the family shrug off soon afterward.* Then Tomasi grief arc which should have lead somewhere but was quickly brushed aside despite one case having to do with Bruce doing something unforgivable. Both are quickly swept under the rug to get onto another jerky thing Bruce does. Bruce even belittles their lack of trust while promising not to keep anymore secrets from them.

You know what we could have instead of the unending loop of Bruce being an ass that never learns his lesson and is always forgiven? Fleshing out how these people relate with each other! We still don't know what relationship Dick has with Tim and Jason. Can't we have something a little more original or at least show that this has consequences like the family keeping secrets from him?

* In fact Tomasi even showed Jason got over DOTF in his grief arc as he was staying at the manor and thanked Bruce for taking care of him. Yet HE'S the one Tomasi has mentioning the fake faces in DOTF? He was over that part before anyone else.

The Latest DC scandal

Are these t-shirts. This is a common problem that needs to stop. It's already hard enough to find some of my favorite character shirts. This isn't just a DC problem either. They don't even sell many female sci-fi/comics shirts in normal stores. Not too long ago I was looking at the ones in the kids sections. The boys had something like "I want to be a ninja/I'm a ninja" the girls had "I'm going to marry a ninja." Even as a kid I'd never get the girl shirt because I wanted to be the ninja.

Also Batman has a wife? Riiight. We know no one's allowed to marry and Batman is kind of a weird choice for commitment anyway.

Anymore Lil' Gotham figures?

I remembered DCC were releasing the figures and apparently they've been delayed. Even so the only figures that have been revealed for the line are Batman, Robin, Joker and Harley. If there is another wave there's a good chance we'll hear about it during Toy Fair. Which will likely be when we'll hear about the Jae Lee line and if Capullo will have anymore waves. It'd be nice to have at least one version of the entire bat family in scale with each other. Especially since Red Robin is taller than he should be al la Gleasons' Batman and Robin #35.

I'm a little surprised

I've been hearing a lot DC readers doubting Damian is coming back. Personally I'll be shocked if he doesn't. They made an animated movie about him, had a mini series and he's not legally dead in the DCU. Bruce even destroyed his grave and promised to bring him back. No other person has come forward in present day stories that could be Robin instead. Stephanie Brown is back as Spoiler, Harper Row will become Bluebird and Carrie Kelly isn't allowed to be used. Anyone else besides Damian would be last minute and not accepted in the role.

I'm already regretting pre-ordering Batman Eternal after seeing scans.

Would Booster do it?

This directly refers to the Futures End Booster Gold issue so SPOILERS AHEAD for those who haven't read it. Oh and BG vol. 2.

You Know that Feeling?

The one you get when writers tease a pairing you don't want together? One that don't mesh, that has one of them treating the other like crap 90% of the time and came out of no where just to create unneeded drama?

Yeah I'm feeling that right now. Don't do it DC you know how well it went over the last time you suggested there might be a thing with one Dicks' love interests and a certain person. Since it doesn't seem to be followed up in a book I assume takes place after the series the teasing takes place it seems even more random.

Next Months' Pull List

Now that we're out of crossover/tie in month we can get back to the present stories. I'll still be going to my LCS for one week but I love getting digital comics. It's great when I can't go out and saves space. Something you know will come in handy during storms.
  • Gotham Academy #1: I think I'll try this out. If nothing else it'll be something new and different. DC may have some failing with the new 52 but the willingness to try out new books isn't one of them. (Oct. 1)
  • Supergirl #35: Maybe? The only reason I'm considering this (as I never read an issue in this 'verse) is because Jason is doing a cameo. Even then I'm cautious as I didn't like what it sounded like in the interview and wasn't a fan of the writers work on Blue Beetle.
  • Red Hood and the Outlaws #35: I'm not sure how this will go but I expect this to be hard to read even if it's good. Dealing with the topic of drug use is hard enough with this group it will be heartbreaking. The emotion involve could be devastating. (Oct. 15)
  • New Warriors #11: I haven't been reviewing this one although I may once it ends at 12. This was a great series that got me to read a Marvel book after years of disinterest. Another great book cut short. (Oct. 22)

Happy Birthday Barbara Gordon!

Well I just found this out which would explain the digital Batgirl sale on the Babs books. I may not care for the new 52 version but I'll always miss who Barbara was before.

Will DC Do a Dick Grayson/Robin Celebration?

The 75th anniversary of Batman is ending--well it's supposed to although I've heard that it may carry on into the new year. But that may also be because Dick Grayson's own 75th anniversary is coming up along with the Robin legacy. Batman had a lot going on this year but what will Dick get? Will it be a celebration of all Robins too?

Personally I'd like for it to not only praise the first boy wonder but also his siblings in spandex. Do an event with the Robins (maybe even future/alternate ones) exploring their days as Batmans' partners and their relationship with each other. This has barely been touched in this 'verse. Dick can be the focus as the oldest brother trying dealing with his legacy and how he feels about the others. Maybe the fallout of them realizing Dick and Bruce faked his death?

Action figures of Agent Grayson, Helena B., new 52 versions of Robins: Dick, Jason, Tim, Damian and Helena?

There's a lot that can be done.

Bette of course isn't going to give up even if her idol said she wasn't good enough. This led to her other Flamebird costume which was replaced for Hawkfire not too long ago.

The character has had some changes since her first incarnation to be sure. Before Barbara Gordon entered the picture there was a blonde that became the first Batgirl. Or rather Bat-Girl. Here's a rundown on her character, the Kanes and wondering where she can go from here.

Christmas Specials

 photo imagejpg2_zps32ae0bda.jpg

I can't tell you how happy I was to see these. Yes things can get grim in superhero comics--especially those connected to Batman--which makes these holiday specials even more amazing. I kind of wished  we got more even other holidays like Halloween, Thanksgiving, etc.

December Solicts

I wish there was more holidays specials. But other than Harley Quinn's special there's only one other book that brings the cheer. BTW DC can we get some variants on RHATO? It's the only bat book to get overlooked. It only had the bombshells variant.

Batgirl #35 ten page preview

I know they said these are uncorrected pages but certain things bug me about this. So these are my thoughts on what's shown.

Have You Ever...

...waited for something to be done with the character you loved? Then you hear that their being used but before you can get excited you see that the plans aren't ones you're thrilled about? Yep, one of my worst fears has been realized. Giffin and DeMatteis are writing Booster Gold and Ted Kord again--despite saying they were finished at least twice already.

Do you ever notice that certain characters are rarely if ever shown at their correct height?

DC Collectibles: Red Hood

There have been three Jason Todd related figures before and for some reason none of them were based on one of the characters ongoing looks. Just brief storylines and only one of which was actually a Red Hood costume. Now we FINALLY have one that fits but was it worth the wait?

Futures End: Grayson

Since my LCS ticked me off with their overpriced 3D variants last year I'm getting my September comics online. This was a iffy choice for me since the concept of Grayson is one I have trouble getting into. Still I wanted to read up on another bat kid and the TT and Batgirl books didn't interest me. Anyway, let's see how life as a spy works out for Mr. Grayson five years in the future.

Batman #409

Continuing where we left off with Batman unknowing handing Jason off to a supposedly sweet teacher who's really a dastardly deadly damsel. How will Jason get out of this situation? Will Batman manage to be a bigger idiot than last issue? For those answers stayed tuned at the same bat page at the same bat time.

Jason and the Family Portrait

I remember thinking Bruce was being mean to Jason here especially later on since we learn that around this time he was acting as Wingman for Batman. (*1) Then Secret Origins #3 came around and we see Bruce did get Jason in a portrait before his death.

One that's as big as the combined one with Alfred, Bruce, Damian, Dick, Tim and Titus. Someday I'd like some writer to properly explore how the death affected the way Bruce sees Jason because there seems to be some shift like he can't fully accept Jasons' back.

1* Yes I know Jason is legally dead but so far no one seems to be dealing with this. Plus if no one has seen Jasons' face a few years after his death and made the connection why should a painter?

DC Collectibles: Arsenal

Many consider Roy Harper the heart of the Outlaws as he seemed like the most determined to keep the group together. Arsenal is the former partner of Green Arrow that tries to rebuild his life after the fall out and believes Jason, Kori and him can make it together. But how did his figure turn out?

Gotham Academy Info Sheets

I really like these extras that help get you interested in the series.

Roy Harpers' New 52 Tattoos

These were hard to see sometimes and some artists have tried not to use them by covering the arms up. However this is Rocaforts' design sheet for said tattoos which was released online:

There has been no explanation for Roy choosing these although some of it can be figured out like the skull with the bow and arrows sticking out of it's mouth. Perhaps they also serve as a reminder not to get lost in addiction again given the scorpion and "Poison." On the left arm is "pesadilla" (nightmare.) Although I wasn't able to read it there was one panel that showed another tattoo lower on his arm which was translated by another reader as "crossbow." (It's been forgotten under other artists.) So needless to say archery and his past demons does prey on his mind.

Patrick Gleason Explains why Tim was Tall

Eww, that's way gross Tim. Although I can see why they just ignored him. Extra points for using a past plot though.

DC Collectibles: Starfire

I waited for them to do Red Hood and the Outlaw figures for a long time and even longer to finally have some good figures of the characters before they became a trio. Ladies first especially since the Princess arrived before her male teammates did.

Secret Origins #5

I don't plan to make it a thing to get this series too often but with no other new comics this week I'm not going to complain.

ORIGIN RELATED SPOILERS AHEAD

Funny thing about the Lazarus Pit

Granted there have been a lot of odd rules but the funniest I found was the explanation for nudity Rucka wrote. Apparently people have had their clothes removed prior to taking a dip because the pit will burn them off regardless. I call this the rule of cake (cheesecake/beefcake.) Although this naked clause doesn't always go with the artwork I can't help but smile when it happens or wince at the awkwardness.

Superman and the Man of Gold

Last week I saw the Booster Gold digest and I bought it assuming it was a comic...it's not. This is set in the Justice League Unlimited verse in The Man Of Steel series. Which is basically a book with ten illustrations. I haven't read it yet but here are some highlights from skimming.

The Discussion questions at the end, Rip Hunters' cameo (he gets a picture too) & Jurgens' ice cream. As for the favorite picture question, that's a hard one. There's Skeets in a police hat. Rip talking to Superman while Booster is being praised. Booster trying to keep himself from being crushed by his own image in the literal sense. There are others that I like but the winner has to be Booster carrying Lois down to a crowd of cheering fans while holding a ice cream cone in his other hand. All of the pictures with him give him so much personality.

What to expect from the Future Ends Tie Ins?

Or as I saw it called filler month, has stated that these are only "possible" futures for their characters but that doesn't mean that seeds Future Ends aren't mixed in. Do these tales have anything to do with the current plots? Will there being any stand out books? Just some musings/predictions for my pull list next month. No real spoilers just things I've seen in the solicits, current stories and interviews. Here's what I'm getting:

Grayson: I have no idea since I dropped after the first issue if this will hint future plots or not. I'm getting this out of curiosity for where they see Dick being in 5 years. I still can't see the spy thing lasting that long for the character since the media knows him better as Robin then Nightwing. Still it's only a possible future. This will apparently take place in Russia and have him taking on the Red Star costume? Maybe that's just the cover. I can't see this affecting much outside of hints of things to come in its own title. Maybe a nod to something that's going on in the background in FE at most.

Batwoman: The current storyline apparently has the vampire angle being teased at. Will Kate become a vampire in present time? I can't see them doing it but it would definitely make her different than the other bats. I'm also interested in seeing Nocturna who they finally made a vampire despite her not previously being one. I have a soft spot for her being pre-crisis Jason Todds' adopted mom for a time.

Red Hood and the Outlaws: This will be dark, likely the darkest thing in this series so far. I have no idea what will happen to Kori as she hasn't been mentioned but apparently the guys aren't on friendly terms. They all go their separate ways which explains a little of Roy's sudden turn into his pre-Flashpoint self (minus the aghast and kid?)

Booster Gold: this is said to be the book that shows the biggest hint of what the future of DC will be in FE. It's also the only tie in that's not an ongoing title. This will be the first time Boosters' been written by Jurgens since the last issue of JLI which is another perk. I'm looking forward to this the most because even if the future is dark there's always hope as long as Booster is around. I have no idea what to expect although I believe this has multiple artists which is rarely good especially for a one shot.

Will any of these characters die in the tie ins? Likely, I'll be surprised if RHATO doesn't kill two of the leads. Roy being semi safe since he's in the main series. If these are all really depressing I might rank them in order from most angsty to least. I'm guessing Booster will be the lightest in tone. Should be interesting to see how off I am.

Getting Next Week!

Okay I'm finally caught up with my pull list, which isn't much but it's nice to be back on track.
  • Secret Origins 5: I don't plan on getting this often but for certain characters I will. This month has Jason Todd who's new 52 origin is a bit unclear at present. I'm hoping for more detail on his time as Robin, his old car theft origin to be restored and maybe some bonding with Alfred and the other guy, Bruce. No idea what we'll get with ten or so pages though.
  • DCC Arsenal and Red Hood. It's a Red Hood month with his cameos in other books, series and these action figures. Starfire came out last week but I'm holding off on a review until I have all of them together.
After that it's September for a double dose of New Warriors and DCs' bleak future month. Red Robins' new figure too.

Red Hood and the Outlaws #34

Technically this is the last issue I'll get before the five years later one shots. Well I'll be getting one more comic this month but it won't be affected by the time jump.

Trip to the LCS

This was the first time I've been to the store since they remodeled that I could actually look around. It's usually too busy to do so without getting in someone's way. I came later than usual and for the first time in ages saw a couple of women shopping too. That was nice, I don't think it's so much that women don't read comics (a large percent do) just that some don't feel comfortable in comic stores. I've been lucky not to have encountered the horror stores I've heard about online. Anyway first thing I noticed was a digest trade of the JLU comic with Superman and Booster Gold. I didn't see a price though. Since I didn't know if I had enough on me I put it back. Hopefully it's still there when I return.

I also saw the small My Little Pony section. Yes I know it's a thing but the hybrid pony/doll was really freaky. The DCC collection was nice although I noticed the paint apps on the Earth 2 figures weren't great especially with WW. Wonder Girl came out good and the effect of the shiny red star field costume was nice. Oh to have more time and money to get some trades.

Barbaras' Anger Issues

I found this post showing some examples of Barbara lashing out at others in the new 52. Gail Simone weighs in on this as well.

Thoughts below.

Serenity: Leaves on the Wind #4-6

Now that I have all the issues together again it's time to finish my Serenity reviews.

Just a few comics that stood out including one in particular that bugged me.

Batman and Robin #34 Preview

This is why I quit getting this series. I'm curious enough with the cameos to take a peek but this problem never gets properly addressed. It's so infuriating that this behavior keeps getting ignored. Needless to say these are my unhappy thoughts on the preview.

Saturday, August 16, 2014

I doubt this will come up--

--but something was bugging me lately. Whenever I heard Gotham Academy I kept thinking that I heard that before in the new 52. I finally figured out where. In RHATO #0 it's said that Jason Todds' mother Catherine went there. I mean not much is known about the new series but it still made me smile to see it.

Happy Birthday Jason Todd!

Here's some odd facts about him:
  • He's the only current Robin to have been asked to take on the role. New 52 has Alfred asking along with Bruce.
  • Counting pre-Crisis he's the sidekick that's had the most parents. Try guessing how many if you don't already know.
  • I don't think they ever said how tall future Damian was/is or the Heretic (although he had his genetics messed with) but Jason is taller than Dick and Tim. Two inches shorter than Bruce.
  • Although his current rebirth is still sketchy pre-52 Jason dug his way out of his coffin with nothing but a belt buckle.

What Artists Deserve Designer Action Figures?

Word is that Jae Lee is joining Greg Capullo in getting a designer action figure line. While not under the DC Collectibles banner (which was DC Direct then) Michael Turner has received his own line and Jim Lee has figures under both company names. This begs the question of what other artists deserve to have their style captured in plastic form.

Red Hood and the Outlaws #33

This issue has Kori once again taking center stage as her past is explored.

NOT SO NEW SPOILERS AHEAD

Who is Rip Hunter in the new 52?

We don't know if he's related to Booster anymore or if they in fact have a working relationship. The only clue we get is this mention in the JLI Annual.

Now the annual confused the hell out of me for multiple reasons, chief among them the fact that very little of the story gelled with Jurgens JLI. I wasn't sure why Booster (both of them) disappeared since present day Booster does so after Clark and Diana kiss. Since I was distracted by all the retcons and everyone remembering him despite the fact he was erased I forgot this detail. According to future Booster Rip was following him to erase the conversation. Booster still exists though and showed up in the past with some memory loss.

Which means one of two things: 1.) new 52 Rip is a bad guy or 2.) Booster is trying to fix something that can't be fixed/shouldn't be messed with.

The second choice makes more sense based on who Rip was but we'll see how this plays out. Notice future Booster is also wearing the same outfit he does in his Futures' End cover.

The Bane of having Favorite Characters

POSSIBLE SPOILERS FOR THIS WEEKS COMICS

Have you ever had one of those days where you look for news about one of your favorite characters and get annoyed with what you find?

Me: Well no variant cover again. Might not be in Lego Batman 3 (although I'm pleased Booster is.) Let's see what's happening in comics.

(Skims online and finds scans of most recent appearance.)

Me: Oh goodie, their talking up character B that hasn't been nearly as good as my fave claims. Not in the relaunch anyway, and it's the same character that's done nothing but treat them like crap for most of their appearances together. Now their letting character B beat them up, saying how great they are while still mentioning something crappy B did to them.

(See a interview for a book one of my faves will be appearing in. I'm a little leery since the last thing I read from the writer ticked me off and that had to do with another of my favorites being written bad. Still curious though since it has to do with the book's' lead. They seemed to get along with each other alright.)

Me: ...Wait are they implying...? No, they wouldn't. They said it was going to be a surprise so it wouldn't be the same person. But later on in the interview they word it like there's an attraction or possible obsession my fave has for the lead...It sounds like a bad thing based on how it's phrased. Please tell me their not going to make this creepy. They had a cute interaction before!

Taking a break from DC

While I'll still be getting RHATO and Earth 2 the solicits killed my enthusiasm for DC for awhile, so I'm putting them aside for now. Marvel didn't really impress me either (other than New Warriors) but I'll be looking over Marvel trades. Some older stories like the first volume of New Warriors and also a newer book that recently caught my attention called Superior Foes. It's about the lesser bad guys of Spider-Man in various funny situations.

I am still looking forward to DC books like the Booster Gold one shot and hoping to see his series return. But for now I need to step away because I feel pretty frustrated.

I was glancing at the Spider Solicits and I saw this

At first I was thinking "that's Ben Reillys' costume, no it'll be the Dr. Ock one--wait it IS Bens' suit!" I get a closer look and realize it's Spider-Girl Mayday Parker! One the one hand yea she's appearing on the other it's under a writer I don't care for during an event that will kill off spider characters. More thoughts below on what this could mean.

DC Collectibles Shows Some New Goodies

Here are some new figures coming out including ones from the Arrow and Flash tv shows.

Grayson #1

These are my first impressions although I'll reread it later to double check since this confused me.

SPOILERS AHEAD

Thursday, July 10, 2014

Status Quo, "Huge Changes" and the Parental Figure

In comics--at least the main two companies--there never seems to be much of an actual lasting change for the characters. Someone gets publically unmasked? Find a way to undo it. Characters are seen as too old for being married? Get a means to retcon it to live out the "glory days." Basically bringing them back to square one in various ways. Needless to say it's one of the reasons I get sick of the more well known characters. There's illusion of change without much if any actual growth. Take Spider-Man for example and you'll know what I mean.

Selfie Variants for some DC Books

Some are kind of blah (the Grayson one being particularly disappointing) while others are cute.

Flash: Yes, I would take a picture of that too! HA!
Harley Quinn: As chaotic as you'd expect. :D
Batman/Superman: Perhaps the cutest of the bunch, just as couple-y as the Wonder Woman/Superman one actually.
Aquaman: Is a photobomber but the fact the shark is there makes it even funnier.
Batman and Robin: Sure it's cute I just have a hard time buying that being Damian. I like that it's on Gordons' wall though.

I REALLY miss May "Mayday" Parker

Not only for how awesome the character is but also the family life of the Parkers. Look at Mary Jane calling Peter on his B.S.

THIS is what I miss from Marvel and why I stayed away for so long after it's cancellation. Ironically enough since the Spider-Girl series spun out of the Clone Saga Scarlet Spider and now New Warriors are the only books I've gotten since.

Wednesday, July 2, 2014

Just what everyone wanted: More Bat Books!

Neither of these really appeal to me although I'm curious what the story with Arkham Manor is. Can you imagine him explaining this one?

Bruce Wayne: Arkham Asylum never worked. I'm doing the smart thing by moving the worst of the worst inside my childhood home. It's the perfect plan.

Jason Todd: By putting them where you live literally on top of the bat cave?

Tim Drake: What about our rooms?

Alfred Pennyworth: What about the family heirlooms? Forgive me but it doesn't sound like you--

Bruce Wayne: I'll be able to watch them all and we'll move into the cave. I put the Penguin in Tims' room. Tony Zucco in Dicks' and the Joker in Jasons'.

Jason Todd: You sick son of a bitch!

We'll see how they spin that one. Anyway, remember how I said I don't care for Deathstroke? Guess who's getting another try at a solo?

Speedballs' Penance

While Robbie is acting more like his old self there's still hints of the darkness .

SPOILERS AHEAD for New Warriors #5

Saturday, June 28, 2014

The New Warriors vs. the Avengers

While there is an actual fight in the issue I liked this confrontation between Speedball/Justice and Ironman/Captain America. It finally addresses the elephant in the room.

This scene actually has a lot of depth going on. Not just the meta wording of "brand" playing with the idea of Stanford ruining the New Warriors. Speedball has a moment that no one else in the room is aware of due to how stressful the topic is and how desperately he wants/needs the team.

But what really won me over was how Justice handles the situation. Some Spoilers ahead.

Most Disliked Characters and Characterizations

It's hard for me because I don't usually hate characters but certain ones do get on my nerves to the point I get annoyed when they show up. To be fair in some cases it's just certain writers that make characters I usually like into unlikable jerks. That is the case for a few on this list. Not all though. There are other characters I'm not fond of that I might hate if I saw more of them. Their not on the list because these are the ones that currently bug me.

Bruces' behavior after Dicks' "Death"

I'm not reading Batman Eternal or any of the Bruce lead books so maybe this has been touched. I want to know how Bruce is acting around the family after they fake Dicks' death. Because it's canon that he's a jackass when grieving. (Well okay everyone besides Tomasi had him dealing with Damians' death maturely.) Won't it be noticeable to them that he's not going crazy? Batman and Robin gave us a Bruce that tried to bring Damian back from the dead without considering what his son wanted. Who treated his second and third adopted sons like crap in some truly inexcusable behavior. Jasons' death made him suicidal and much darker. The only reason this shouldn't be a red flag is if they think it means he doesn't care...which would be weird since Dick's supposed to be the golden boy of the family.

The Pros/Cons of Ditigal Comics

I usually get digital comics on weeks I can't go to my LCS or shipping would costs too much. For me there are really only two down sides to this: Not supporting comic shops and how incontinent it can be when you want to read a issue but can't. Either because of lack of internet access or privacy to enjoy the comics.

For DC their books go down in cost after awhile but Marvels' don't. At least I haven't seen this for their current titles. While I do enjoy having a physical copy it's nice to know that I'll be able to reduce space and if I like the title enough I can get the trade later on. I'm also a fan of the guided viewing option that takes you through the comic panel by panel. I just really like the convenience but I'm not sure if I'll convert completely.

Grayson #1 Preview

Ironically Jason Todds' the only Robin that currently has a book but next week Dick Graysons' new title gets released. Looks like Dick is doing a Ben Reilly. If you know what that reference means before checking out the preview give yourself a goldstar.

Updated Pull List

  • Grayson (Maybe. I'll at least try the first issue.)
  • Earth 2
  • New Warriors (First Marvel series I'm following since Spider-Girl ended.)
  • Red Hood and the Outlaws (Slightly behind because I misplaced a couple issues.)
I do suspect I'll be dropping Grayson and if that happens I have nothing to replace it with. Marvel will be having a event for Spider-Man called Spiderverse that's supposed to have every spider character they can legally show. Normally I'd love this since I'm a big fan of lots of the spiders but I don't know about the writer. It's be a great time to have a MC2 tie in with Spider-Girl, Darkdevil and the rest but I'm not sure if I'd trust them not to kill the characters off.

Short Review: Forever Evil #7

I'm way behind on my comic reading and reviewing. Anyway not so new spoilers ahead.

So I'm giving Marvel a try

Although I'm limiting what's on my pull list because I don't want to get sucked into other books. I bought Christopher Yosts' Scarlet Spider trades which I might review at some point but I mostly love what he did with Kaine. Since he's writing New Warriors with Scarlet Spider in the cast I got all those issues and plan on having it in my pull list. Much like Scarlet Spider it's a very unrated book that's getting overlooked and needs more support to survive. I'm really looking forward to this newly solicited issue:

NEW WARRIORS #9
CHRISTOPHER YOST (W) • MARCUS TO (A)
CoverS by TAKESHI MIYAZAWA
• It’s the anti-buddy movie as odd couple JUSTICE and SCARLET SPIDER hit the road together, heading for HOUSTON, TEXAS.
• Scarlet Spider never wanted to be on a team, with… people. And this issue, he shocks no one by QUITTING!
•Can Justice convince him to stay? No! Can they dude-bond by fighting a hundred foot tall guy in a bear suit? Probably not!

Happy Fathers' Day!

What better way to celebrate it than to remember one of the best if most unconventional father/son relationships in comics?

Booster Gold and Rip Hunter!

Remember how Rip was trying to help Booster become the greatest most selfless hero of all time? How about how annoying that could be?

Then the utter amazement when Booster was able to do something by himself?

I miss these two more than any other DC relationship.

I think this is the first time I ever brought a whole wave of action figures. I only opened the Talon so far and I'm not sure if/when I'll open the rest. While I do think Riddler is an excellent sculpt I'm still considering saving it for a present in the future. In general I'm not a very big collector of bad guys unless their related to the heroes (hence William Cobb.) One of the reasons I'm not in a hurry to open the others up? Much like Superboy the Talon figure smells like plastic and B.O. I'm not sure how that happened but it did. I'm waiting for the scent to fade away but I am working on a review.

The next wave of figures I'll be collecting will be the Outlaws (Red Hood/Starfire/Arsenal) and Worlds Finest (Power Girl/Huntress.) With any luck they won't have that smell.

The Worst Dads' List

I don't really agree with most of Newsaramas' list and this one definitely had some problems.

I mean Spider-Man? Yeah his actions in OMD weren't great but using that and his assumption that his daughter was dead don't exactly rank him up with Trigon in my book. Read Spider-Girl (MC2) he may be overprotective but Peter turned out to be one of the best dads in comics.

Roy Harper, seriously? Because Lian was kidnapped in the past and she died? No. He was a great dad and those things don't change that. She didn't die because of anything he did, Roy had a babysitter that knew how to fight to protect her when he wasn't there. I think he always had a fighter to look over her. Mia was blamed for abandoning Lian during Cry for Justice something I don't believe they ever explained but regardless not his fault.

I don't have a problem with Batman being on here because he treats his kids pretty badly. And I do believe that was a huge contributing factor in Jason and Damians' deaths. I just disagree on either Barbara or Stephanie being surrogate daughters to him. I never got the impression he sees them that way. Cassandra yes, them no.

Gun Control: Bruce, Jason, and Alfred

This topic comes up from time to time. We all know Batman is anti-gun yet some of his allies are seen with them. Dick Grayson for example already has a bit of a controversy for using a gun in his upcoming book although he has carried one when he was a police officer in the old canon. Where is the line drawn? Batmans' view on guns--whether their lethal or not--keeps changing story to story.

Marvel Digital Comics?

I've been flirting with the idea of giving a couple Marvel titles a try. I thought it'd be a good idea to go digital but the prices! I know Marvel is mainly $3.99 compared to the mostly $2.99 at DC. But the DC comics I get digitally get go down in price over time. I was able to read most of Earth 2 at a good discount, some single issues at $1.99.

The Original Art Work for Nightwing #30

Before the delay with Forever Evil Tynion wrote Nightwing #30 and artist Meghan Hetrick did the art. I don't think Tynion has released the script but the art tells most of the tale as Hetrick has released the images as DC has allowed her to sell the pages.

Thoughts below the cut.

Secret Origins #2

I don't really get the point in this series, at least re-telling the origins of characters that already had their origins told during #0 month. I'm a little behind on my reviews but this one was short enough for me to feel like writing something about it.

Origin based SPOILERS AHEAD

Nightwing spoilers

I didn't get the issue because of scans online. No, not because of the Helena B. controversy but rather the writing. Thoughts and SPOILERS below.

Why wear the Bat Suit and the Disguise?

Apparently there are more Robins than we know about. It looks like Dick, Jason, Tim, Steph, Carrie and Damian were all lucky they stayed on his good side.

More September Covers for Futures End tie ins

No surprise here but I think Booster Golds' my favorite. Not just for the Jurgens art but the better costume (which was already shown in the JLI Annual.) It does have a 90s feel but better than the footie pj look. I know it's just a cover so it doesn't mean it reflects the content inside but man Roy looks like a jackass.

New Figures and Bombshell Covers

DCC has pics of Hawkman and Stargirl as well as the next waves of Batman the Animated series.

The Bombshells variant covers now have Carol, Lois, Talia, and others. There are some good ones there but the Kori cover feels a little off to me. Not just that it has Halys' Circus on it (we're focusing on her past relationship AGAIN?) but it doesn't feel like the character to me. I wouldn't have been able to tell who it was supposed to be at a glance. Plus the eyes are wrong. Granted not all of these are spot on but still.

That's a werid vacation pic Slim

This raises so many questions. Does Scott think that no one will believe he's having sex unless he sends them a picture after the act? Did he send all the X-Men/his brother this or just Xavier? Who took the photo?!

Cyclops' Love Life Summed up in a Panel

Right after Scott asks Madelyne Pryor if she's really Phoenix/Jean Grey. Later on he'll run out on her and their infant son. Then much later he'll cheat on Jean with Emma Frost. Logan has more class around the ladies than Scotty does.

Preferring the family over Spider-Man

I've come to realize that like Batman I mostly prefer the rest of the family over Spider-Man. This wasn't always the case but after OMD I can't find myself caring about him except in the MC2 verse. I quit Marvel altogether after Spider-Girl was cancelled. I haven't cared for what I've heard about Peter Parker since and just feel indifferent towards him in general. It's funny but for as controversial as the Clone Saga was...I like a lot of the characters/ideas that came from it. Mayday Parker, Ben Reilly and Kaine Parker.

In fact I'm mighty tempted to get the trade to Kaines' run of Scarlet Spider. It looks fun despite the characters' dark. I told myself that I wouldn't get any Marvel comics until Spider-Girl returns (and hopefully gets that huge hanging plot thread tied up since it's been hanging for over a decade!) But this seems like a good read.

DC Collectibles Superboy

I got this on a whim, while I like Superboy he's never been one of my top 20 list.

Marvel Movies and Canon

After watching several movies over the past few weeks a few things hit me.

  1. I prefer all the live action Marvel movies over the live action DC movies.
  2. I like (most of) the Marvel movie canon more than most of Marvels' comic canon.

Captain America The First Avenger and Winter Solider

I saw CAWS twice in the theaters now and recently rewatched the first one. Just some thought concerning the movies.

SPOILERS AHEAD for those that haven't seen them and mention of the comics which may affect the future movies.

My Favorite Recap of Boosters' Origin

He's certainly had his fair share of origin retellings and I believe this one was the shortest way to sum it up. I also like it because it tells us a lot about Booster and Maxs' relationship filling in the blanks for the scene he arrived for their appointment. I suppose it might not make sense in hindsight since this was around the time Booster was trying to hide his past from the world at large. Then again he might have felt compelled to come clean with the guy that claimed to be his connection to the JL. For all he knew Superman was going to be on the team and would likely bring it up.

Yet Booster doesn't show any shame for what he did, it's just matter-of-fact here. Bravado? Likely but it's also speaks volumes for his character which Max sees and approves of. Because out of all the JLI Boosters' probably the one that's most like him. Their business men that have their own shady past. While Max might have been playing him here (given the timeline and his own agenda it seems likely) I get the impression he honestly does like him. I think it's not just because they share some traits but also because Booster seems more human than the other heroes he's met so far. He messed up, is willing to own up to it, still tries and is just gutsy. It's not what he expected.

I really miss this interaction, so much wasted potential.

Booster Gold issue dicussed

Another Future's End interview but this one mentions the one shot and confirmation that Jurgens is writing the issue. YAY!

Superdickery Day 26: A bad husband

I missed another day thanks to computer trouble but I think I'll be ending Superdickery month early anyway. I may post some bat-related scans though.

So Lois is supposed to be blamed for getting jealous of Superman hiding pictures of his girlfriends away in a safe? Uh, that's a jackass move on his part, if there wasn't anything wrong with it he wouldn't try to hide something like that in a safe!

Superdickery Day 25: Framing his friend(s) for the hell of it

Not to mention the randomness of what he accuses Batman of. If it's for witchcraft then there are other members of the JLA he could bring in. The most shocking thing about this cover is that Batman--the worlds' greatest detective--still hasn't figure out that Superman is evil.

Superdickery Day 24: Superman really hates Jimmy

He truly loathes no one as much as Jimmy Olsen. If he has his way Jimmy will die multiple times.

Why Deacon Blackfire Mattered

I heard Blackfire being mentioned recently. Which is a pretty big deal if it's him. I hope they aren't retconning this as his first time crossing Batmans' path. Mainly because it was one of the most important Jason Todd stories when he was a Robin. But the mythos set up in Batman The Cult are pretty compelling and I hate for any of it to be lost in a relaunched origin for the character.

SPOILERS of course for Batman The Cult.

Superdickery Day 23: Ruining Jimmys' love life

Okay I have no idea what the context is but it looks like Superman is intentionally giving people the impression he's Jimmys' lover. Why? Well why does he do anything? You gotta love Jimmys' fake enthusiasm as he realizes the awkward position he's in now.

Superdickery Day 22: Calling his his girlfriends stupid for something no one else figures out

I mean it's not like they were the only ones fooled by the glasses thing. Lex Luthor is supposed to be a genius and even he doesn't know. (*1) And Jimmy Olsen is his biggest fan. Although this might explain why Clarks' pissy all the time--he's sick of all the dumb people on Earth.

*1 Actually there was a non-Silver Age story that had Luthor figure it out but he dismissed it because the idea was too ridiculous.
