Short Review: Red Hood (and the) Outlaw(s) #44 Vol. 2

The team go undercover to work with General Glory while Essence makes her move against the Untitled.

I never know how to feel about General Glory, he's usually portrayed as more of a joke than he is here. He can get the job done as a hero but he's usually patriotic to the point it's comedic and has been a danger to those around him. I'm curious if his past where he endangered his sidekick(s) Ernie (sometimes there were a few) will be referenced. The exchange between Jason and him about being a solider does remind me of the "good solider" tag that's been put on Jasons' case.

GG is a jackass here, repeatedly insulting Jason and expecting the Outlaws to fall in line. Sure, this is technically Jason's third contact with the US government after working freelance for Tara Battleworth and helping out FBI agent Melissa Michell, but he's not an agent himself. To just expect blind obedience when none of them have any loyalty towards him and are just helping because of a common goal? Without their help, or more specifically Jason's, the whole operation is screwed. He needs the Outlaws more than they apparently need him. Jason even tries to point out that it's not wise to insult them but GG keeps going on which leads to Jason just ignoring him anyway.

It was nice to see Jason's positive feelings towards the protestors and his talk with Bizarro. Jason grew up in horrible conditions so it makes sense that he appreciates this movement. He just doesn't consider himself brave enough to join them in their peaceful protest. Bizarro has noticeably changed leaving Jason a little uncertain, but at the same time he remains the same in the ways that matter. When Artemis and Bizarro came back Jason seemed angry with Artemis for not keeping them together. Now he feels guilty for not trying harder to find his friends and losing them in the first place. Something he had absolutely no control over. Like last issue Jason is still the odd man out trying to figure out where he belongs in the current group dynamics.

Artemis resents her undercover work and reflects on not wanting to have a job that's based solely on money after being employed by Luthor. I hope we get to see that storyline play out before whatever big changes DC has planned. Back in #19 Jason mentioned Essence to Artemis and Essence apparently spies on Jason since she knew about Isabel, but do Essence and Artemis know each other? It seems like it as Essence refers to Artemis as a "friend to the family." Granted it seems like the connections of the Untitled obelisk, the Bana-Mighdall and Jason's death site can't be a coincidence.

The more I hear about Jason's training the more curious I am. He didn't try to sense the Untitled member in the first arc of the first volume, although I don't think she was possessing a body. I am a little confused because a member was possessing someone in the flashback, something I think was forbidden due to the truce between the Untitled and All Caste. The basic premise of Jason sensing them has to do with him opening his heart. Yet last issue he couldn't sense them and didn't know why. He does eventually see them at the end of the issue. I might research this a little more because this feels like something Lobdell has been leaving clues about for awhile.

The twist of the Brain/Ma Gunn connection is the implication that they used to be an item. I don't think this is supposed to suggest that he's Jason's grandfather. I'm not certain about the timeline as we don't know when or how the two first met. If he was the Brain back then it's simply not physically possible. Not without scientific means at least. If he was still human then he wouldn't, presumably, be connected to any evil organizations. Faye calls him "Ernst", and Willis says he named Jason after his (Jason's) grandfather. I haven't gotten into Doom Patrol yet as I have the same problem as with LOH, I don't know where to start. But none of the sites I checked online have much information on the Brain before he lost his body, so there's still a lot that's not accounted for.

I'm more than curious what direction this story will take. Is it wrapping things up? Are we going to get a big reveal or two? What's with connecting Qurac storylines? This issue only has me more interested in seeing what happens next.

Say What?:  Awhile back Roy was the member in the team that got teased and some objected it stating Roy was coming off like an idiot. Now Jason seems like he is the one getting that attention although it feels a tad more abusive, at least with what GG says to him. Bizaro gets sassy when Jason talks about how he used to be, Artemis blames him for their current situation before mentally correcting herself because General Glory is actually in command at the moment.

General Glory doesn't have enough hope in his heart to be possessed. Interesting take, I'm intrigued because he's usually absurdly optimistic.

Did You Notice?: The flashback with Artemis as a sword for hire working for Luthor has the prisoner wearing normal clothes instead of an inmate outfit.

Questions Asked?: Why is Jason still so open about his ID now that he's legally alive? He even says
"Todd out."

Where is GG and his people getting this intel on Jason? How did they know he's the one person to go to in order to take on the Untitled?

After the war or two with Qurac their fine hiring an Amazon? If the last one didn't happen in WW this works better as the Bana accepted refugees into their city.

Last time Jason was in Qurac he was freaking out. Is he too busy to thing about being in the country he died in?
