No, I don't think Lobdell made a mistake. Originally he planned to tell a story about Catherine having a baby. Plans changed and even in the issue it's only shown in art and never commented by Jason himself. She could have lost the baby or even given the baby up and Jason's only child comments would still make sense. That's how he grew up.
