Happy New Year !

I had some good comics and a lot of bad ones this year. I think we all know Robin War is at the top of the bad and since I already wrote why I'll just say it's for a good reason. With one issue left nothing can save it. I'd like to focus on the positive instead.

This year gave me an excellent mini series in Back to the Future which is now an ongoing thanks to popular demand. While editorial mandates has messed with the momentum in Red Hood/Arsenal there was still a lot of good character work for both leads. Gotham Academy was mostly decent even if it feels like it's running out of steam at the moment. Green Lantern Lost Army was pretty good. Doomed was very underrated and a lot of fun with two amazing characters in Reiser and Roman.

I enjoyed most of the Star Wars books I read including the main series, Darth Vader (which had an epic moment of him realizing who Luke was) and Kanan The Last Padawan. We got another Star Wars movie (I'll elaborate on that at a later point) and more on the way.

I'm hoping for next year to be better and for us all to have more excellent comics.

Robin Son Of Batman #7

We had a good tie in and ONE good issue of this Robin War event in We Are Robin #7. A six part event where only a single part has been enjoyable isn't a good sign for a story. Fawkes does the dialogue for this and since he did part 3 (Detective Comics) that doesn't feel like a good sign either.

We Are Robin #7

Thus far everything that I read that's Robin War related has been horrible except for Red Hood/Arsenal #7 which was a tie in that actually had Jason acting in character. While brief it celebrated what it meant to be a Robin and maturely addressed his past with Tim. Which I don't think anyone else has done in the relaunch. Now I'm not a fan of the concept of We Are Robin nor the interviews I read which didn't seem to get the Robin legacy. Still I heard this was another bright spot in an otherwise abysmal event. Even if it's nothing but chatting together for the whole comic it'd be better than the other three parts.

Short Review: Titans Hunt #3

Yep I got my last comics of the year. I forgot that this was coming in the mail. It's been so long since I read the last issue that I forgotten what it's like reading this series. I remember the plot it's just the style of writing that's kinda blurry. What can I say, I read worst and that made this one a little forgettable in comparison.

I'll be able to see The Force Awakens soon but I'm planning on seeing the other six before I see the new movie. It's a good time to be a fan.

Happy Birthday Stan Lee!

The closest I came to meeting him was being at the same con as him. Everyone heard he was there and you couldn't even move in any direction unless the wave of people around you was heading there. It was the most unbearable con I've ever been at but people love Stan that much.

Any comic book resolutions ?

I'm thinking of a few:

  • Not getting titles with certain writers unless it can't be avoid. (For example if they took over a series I'm getting. Then they get a short period to win me over.)
  • When an event happens don't get it unless: it's only a couple of extra issues or wait until it's over to see how if turned out.
  • Try out a new series?

That's all I got for now.

A Year of Comics I read in 2015

Sadly there were A LOT of disappointing and bad comics this year. There were also some bright spots that are worth mentioning. If I get WAR and RSOB before the new year and feel like their worth mentioning here I'll add them.

Red Hood/Arsenal #7

I made it to the editors' note before I stopped to read Robin War #1. We already have continuity problems with this event and criminally bad characterization. This is just a tie in although it's the last connection to Robin War I have before I get the WAR and RSOB issues in a week or so. Depending on the delay since they haven't shipped yet.

Detective Comics #47

Well Grayson #15 officially got rid of the excitement I had for this event. I have little hope left but the spect I have is because we have different writers for the next three partners not including tie ins. Let's see if the trend of crap continues.

Robin War part 1-3 Summary

To sum up the three issues I've read so far and how I feel about this event.

No real spoilers

Grayson #15

Taking place right after Robin War #1. For some reason it has the WAR kids, Tim and Damian on the cover in Owl masks without Jason and Dick. Still an excellent cover I just wish we got all the Robins together. It would have been awesome.

We never got the answer and unless he turns up in something Jurgens does it seems unlikely we ever will. I don't think I ever talked about my theory. Let's look at the clues and I'll try to explain why I don't think it would be a more obvious choice.

Back to the Future #3

I was surprised that this mini series suddenly went from a four parter to a five parter but according to IDW there was enough demand that their going to have an ongoing series ! I wonder if the adventures will continue from the third movie on or fill in more blanks. Maybe their do both. More information will be available "very soon" so it's likely sometime after this mini ends.

I FINALLY got my comics

I understood that there would be delays when I pre-ordered online and knew they would come a bit late due to the holiday season. I was just a little worried when I started to wonder if my order got lost. Usually this type of order would come in a couple days after the release date thanks to the big trade set I got upping the s/h and this was longer than I expected even with the delay in mind. Thankfully I got my biggest comic stash of the month just before Christmas. I'm working for the next few days so we'll see if I'll be able to put up many reviews.

I think I have the Robin War books in the proper reading order with Red Hood/Arsenal taking place before the others. Fingers crossed that I like this event. I should be getting the next two installments at the end of the month with the last coming in the new year. No idea how I'll feel about Batman/Superman although I'm fairly confident I'll love Back to the Future. I ordered Uncle Scrooge thinking it was a different run but it still looks like a nice set. It should be fun.

Event thoughts

I'm still waiting for my comics but I've been thinking about crossovers. In general I'm tired of them because there are too many, they often only have characters that aren't my favorite or tiny unimportant roles for those that are my favorites. Lately they have been expensive and boring.

What I'd like is for a crossover to make sure everyone is in character in every book, the story matches up and the characters' personalities being used in interesting ways. Most recent events seem to be very paint by numbers and I want that fun feeling back. The allies vs. allies bit can be interesting but it's overused. More often than not it feels forced.

I was looking at some of the titles listed for Free Comic Book Day and while DC hasn't listed theirs yet I realized I wasn't looking forward to it. I wasn't interested in any of the storylines DC have been promoting in for FCD the last few years. Which is sad because I always look forward to FCD stuff.

Days of Christmas: Spider-Girl ponders the holidays

My theme with my choices might seem odd by now. I'm pretty much choosing short and/or lesser known issues. This one starts with a Parker Christmas tradition May shares with her uncle: beating up a gang of criminals dressed as Santa. Spider-Girl #54

Thursday, December 10, 2015

Days of Christmas: Scarlet Spider beats up a bunch of Santas

Scarlet Spider (Kaine Parker) is trying to make something of his life since he's no longer dying and attempting to reform after being a supervillain. But a recent disaster leaves him depressed yet somehow this issue manages to be so much fun.

Wednesday, December 9, 2015

Days of Christmas: Spider-Man Meets Nate Grey

This might seem like an odd choice but there's a good reason for this. This came out around the time I was getting into comics, it had two heroes meeting for the first time and dealt with loss. It made an impression. Amazing Spider-Man #420.

Cheap DC Doll Option?

1/6 figures are expensive with the lowest being in the hundreds. Sometimes companies make clothing to sell by it's self but say you want to have a certain character and you don't want to spend triple digits. Well in some cases you can but there are catches.

Days of Christmas: The X-Men run into a new mutant

From the Marvel Holiday Special trade I have with which doesn't say if these are all reprints (which I assumed they were) or where they would come from. I'm pretty much done with Marvel superheroes except MC2 Spider-Girl and Scarlet Spider (both rarely appear.) I do remember this trade fondly and this story stood out.

Karl Kerschl Leaves Gotham Academy

Ending issue #12. I really enjoyed his art on the book and it feels odd to think of the series without him. I'll definitely miss seeing his work.

Days of Christmas: Booster gives Dick Grayson a Reminder

Another one where the holiday has very little to do with the plot and is only briefly seen. Since this is also written and drawn by Dan Jurgens it's not surprising.

Batman Telltale game

Much like Game of Thrones, The Wolf Among Us and Walking Dead we are getting a telltale Batman game. I wonder if their do anything extreme like show what would happened if he killed.

Robin issues on sale

For digital comics, mostly Dick and Tim comics. A few WAR issues yet Damian oddly seems to be the official Robin with the least amount of comics in the sale.

Days of Christmas: Booster Gold goes home

I don't know if I'll get 12 days but this is a look at Christmas/Holiday issues. I'm not going over the entire issue if I reviewed it before. Sometimes the story only has it in the background much like Booster Gold #13-15 volume 1.

Wednesday, December 2, 2015

The New Teen Titans #27

I reviewed an issue of this arc before and hoped to get the begininng of it. I missed the mark as this still isn't isn't it. Blood has Raven and Nightwing while the Titans (Donna, Kory, Jason, Gar, Vic and Joey) try to find them while taking on the Brotherhood of Evil.

Delayed Reviews

I'm going to have some late reviews this month for the newer comics due to waiting for them to be mailed or being too busy to go the store. I'm not sure if I'll review RHA before I get the other issues since I get it digitally. I think I won't have Robin War #1 until a week or maybe two. I might review some of the older back issues I brought in the meantime.

More TMNT !

I'm not visiting my sister and my brother-in-law this year since she's too busy with work. I did get some more IDW TMNT TPBs from them though. I was hoping that was my gift. Even if I don't like Robin War in December at least I'll have the turtles and Back to the Future. I think there's something like 12 or so volumes in trade so I still have quite a bit to catch up on.

Booster Gold Tarot Card

Found here. I looked up the meaning which suits him well. Granted the description is the normal card but the meaning still applies. Sort of, depending on the canon I guess.

"The Six of Wands depicts a man wearing a victory wreath around his head, riding a white horse through a crowd of cheering people. The white horse represents strength, purity, and the success of an adventure, and the crowd of people demonstrates public recognition for the man’s achievements. The wand held by the rider also has a wreath tied to it, further emphasising success and achievement. He is not afraid to show off to others what he has accomplished in his life so far, and even better, the people around him cheer him along."

Finished Shopping

I'm still waiting for one item to come in through the mail and waiting to hear if I'll be exchanging gifts with others but I'm pretty much done. If anyone else wants to give gifts we'd do gift cards anyway. But it's such a relief to have it all done so early.

Another Robin War Interview

This sounds like it can go either way. I just don't want the standard "these characters are useless and/or a problem" despite them having a lot of experience. The in fighting can be tiresome and the concept needs to be balanced right to not make any of the good guys look bad.

Sending gifts

There's something profoundly satisfying about being able to Tetris all the presents you're sending into one box. At least until you see how much it costs to ship it.

The Middle Children

One of the few things most bat writers hooked on to from RHATO is Jason Todd and Tim Drakes' closeness. Since it looks like we're getting a repeat of DOTF with these two facing off again in a forced death match I thought it might be a good idea to talk about them.

Books I got

I finally used my gift card for the buy two graphic novels get one free deal. I realized I never read Batman Haunted Knight and don't actually own a copy of DKR. Which is odd, I thought I did. Still I've been exchanging/borrowing books with people for awhile. For my third book I had a hard time picking. It came down to Wolf Among Us and a Harley Quinn title (pre-Flashpoint.) As much as I love the video game I've been hearing the comic wasn't as good. I'm not a Harley fan, I don't care either way but I thought it might make a nice gift for my sisters' birthday. She's not as big a fan as some but she likes Harley.

Batman/Superman #26

Lately I'm more than a little hesitant to get issues with Bat family members doing cameos because a lot of writers have gotten the characters wrong recently. Doing things that make them unlikable and/or makes no sense. I don't even look at spoilers for a certain title because it's pretty much guaranteed to tick me off. While I didn't think Greg Paks' first Batman/Superman annual was perfect I did think it was enjoyable and he had a pretty good handle on one particular character. Let's see how he handles three bat kids interacting with Superman.

DC Solicits for February 2016

Not too many to get this month but maybe a few to comment on.

How trades edit back up stories

I know that back when Booster Gold had the Jaime Reyes Blue Beetle back up stories they were edited into their own TPB. Up until now I've either seen the back up split up from the main book in trades or all the back ups combined into the back of the TPBs. What did Marvel do? They put the Spider Island and Spider-girl stories back to back like they were issue to issue.

Meaning you have to read Spider Island then Spider-Girl back again and again instead of simply separating the two. Why is it put together this way?

Star Wars Womens' Fashion

It's always great to see outfits marketed towards women.

It'll be coming soon

Black Friday and Cyber Monday, etc. I managed to get a good chunk of my shopping done early but I'm always curious what sales are going on. I still have a gift card for BAM but I can't think of any comics/graphic novels I want to get that are out. Their currently having a buy two trades get a third free deal. Any recommendations? I'm interested in DC (mainly Bat books), Star Wars, and pre-OMD Spider-Man.

Happy Birthday Spider-Girl !

A little talked about fact that Halloween is May "Mayday" Parkers' birthday thanks to the Green Goblin making Mary Jane go into labor just so he could be ironic when he made his big comeback. May never got to be reunited with her parents in main canon but she was in MC2.

Team Ups and Guest Starring

Teams ups (for an extended period) and/or guest appearance (short cameos.) Righ now there seems to be three types of these.
  1. Well written and in character.
  2. Written horrible bad and out of character.
  3. They show up usually in the background and you're lucky if they say anything.
I've been hearing that number two has been happening pretty often lately. Fingers crossed that the ones I'm getting will be good.

Roy Harpers' Behavior Part 4

Things took a turn in Titans Hunt but I don't think it was due to poor research or simply not caring what Red Hood/Arsenal were doing. At least not if I was picking this up right. I think this is something Lobdell has been planning since at least the second issue of RHA to connect with TH.

Graysons' Uncomfortable Vibe

The number one thing that I dread reading in Grayson is how Dick's' treated sexually. Others took notice too. Given past stories and the fact 13 issues have gone by with this still going on it raises concerns. Seeley implies it might be addressed but it seems too little and too late.

I still haven't gotten around to Grayson

I got the digital copy for $3.99 to review but I keep hearing bad things so I've been putting it off. I read two issues already. The first which wasn't for me and Futures End which was much better. I'm thinking I probably won't like it. But if I'm in the right mood that can be pretty entertaining.

I did finish the first Batman 66' trade. I liked some issues more than others, it helped that I started playing the theme whenever a fight broke out.

I was informed that my comment on Roy was true. Seriously ? I was just using the dumbest thing I could think of since I had so many Jason examples. I guess I'll have to wait to read the issue but I can't think of a reason for that not being stupid.

Arguing Time Travel

I tried to debate this with my mom but she refuses to get what I'm trying to say.

Back to the Future SPOILERS AHEAD

Venting my frustrations with comics

This will be specifically DC since I'm not currently reading much of Marvel outside of the Star Wars trades but that doesn't mean the company doesn't share a few of these problems. I try not to dwell on the relaunch issues but there are things still concern me.

Big Haul Headed my Way

Not only will I get Titans Hunt #1 and Back to the Future #1 next week I'll be having some new comics to catch up on. Green Lantern Lost Army 2-4, since I decided not to trade wait to get caught up by the time the new mini series comes out in January. I'm finally getting Grayson #12 to see how the whole thing reads. If nothing else at least I know GLLA will be good, right ?

Happy Back to the Future Day !

I didn't see much in the stores but there was plenty online. Maybe today wasn't what they said it would be but that doesn't mean it wasn't a good day. At least for me. Next week I should get the first issue of the BTTF mini and I hope it lives up to my expectations. If nothing else I'll finally know the answer to the question that bugged me for a long time: how did Marty met the Doc ?

Doomed #5

With this released there's only one more issue to go.

Star Wars The Force Awakens Trailer

Thoughts below with some speculation and spoilers from the trailer.

The most out of no where cover this month

DC January Solicits 2016

Every once in awhile I come across someone that doesn't read solicits because they want to be surprised. That's a good idea but I don't know if I could do that. I love reading the solicits. It also tells me which new books are coming out and when my favorites are appearing in other books. I can budget better that way and won't run as big a risk of missing out.

Jim Lees' Titans Hunt Variant

Donnas' costume looks different, I'm not sure if it's black pants or a shadow. Roy seems to be wearing the same costume (except the hat) from RHATO which makes ZERO sense. Is Dick the youngest one there? I'll never get used to the idea of a Robin having a uniform that has an arrow pointing to the crotch. Not even Roy does that with his current arrow themed looks.

Star Wars The Force Awakens Poster

I'm not too hyped (yet) but this did make me happy.

Semi-Spoilers? Well, at least one. Also note who's missing.

Lois and Clark in DCnU?

I read some spoilers which raise some interesting questions. Particularly when the old universes' Superman meets Batman and they discover most of his history stayed the same.

Bruce Wayne vs. Social Sevices

Yep it actually happened in comics. The storyline that took place in Gotham Knights #43-45. It was a great idea that wasn't pushed as far as it should have been. Sure there's emotional issues involved, especially for Bruce, but it leaves a lot to be desired. Still was worth a look since it explores--if only briefly--the trouble that arises when Bruce Wayne adopted kids and one of them dies under mysterious causes. It shows the fallout of Jason Todds' death in the past and in the present. (You know, before the Under the Hood arc.)

OLD SPOILERS AHEAD

The wait is the hardest part

I'm excited about Back to the Future and Titans Hunt but I pre-ordered them online which means I'll have to wait for them to come in. This also means not going to my usual online sites. Sometimes I forget what day it is and it really ticked me off when I happen upon unmarked spoilers. The only title I'll get to read on time is Doomed which I get digitally.

October 21st happens to be Back to the Future day to mark the day Marty went into the future. Only no hover boards...still it should be fun.

The End of BaRE #2

This was spoiled for me on a facebook page. Since then I heard all kind of things from various people. Then I remembered something Tynion wrote.

SPOILERS AHEAD

DC Coloring Book Variants

The usual suspects are here but I am shocked, honestly shocked what book they finally included. Odd that neither the Batman 75th anniversary cover or the Joker one warranted variants for this series. But hey I'm just glad we finally got one. With luck we'll get one for the 75th Robin anniversary.

The Situation with Roy

The end of the latest RHA was rather sudden and alarming for Roy. What does it mean for his future?

Star Wars Trades

Other than an upcoming TPB with the last Spider-Girl story the only things I'm getting from Marvel are Star Wars trades. I might sample an issue of the Lando and Chewbacca series before I get them since the Princess Leia series disappointed me. I just got some books in the mail including Star Wars and Darth Vader. There were some minor problems I had but I'm really enjoying this and I'm looking forward to future issues. These are the kind of stories I love trade waiting for because their good for a long sit.

Did select comics come out early?

A day or so ago I saw early reviews for some issues. I thought nothing of it because sometimes sites get to read things early. Then today I saw some despairing remarks about what's being teased at for BaRE 3 (which sadly sounds like something I called when it was announced.) Then I went to an online store which has a few series instock while others aren't. Usually they change them all from pre-order to in stock on the same day.

Writers' Block: The Complicated Relationship of Bruce Wayne and Jason Todd Part 4

The journey into becoming someone else and the psychology of what they do. Some other thoughts that came to mind too.

Steve Orlando Interview

Maybe he has something more encouraging to say about BaRE? I didn't have too much interest in this so just a few things I wanted to mention.

Green Latern: Edge of Oblivion Cover

I'm glad to see there will be more of these guys coming soon. I love this cover!

Here's an idea: Dead Robins

The recent NYCC stuff didn't fill me with much optimism. Snyder is ignoring Damian because he doesn't know how to write him. None of the writers present--at least according to one version--seem to favor Jason. 2016 is supposed to be a big year for the Robins yet we have BaRE which apparently doesn't know how to write Jason and will mostly be ignoring Damian. So why don't we have someone explore the obvious connect between the two?

The Kanes and the Waynes

I find it a little amusing and a little sad that neither Kate or Bette are more involved in their family's' lives. Both are Bruces' cousins yet he's distant with them despite knowing their IDs even though he's gone to lengths to protect them both. I don't think Damian has met any of the Kanes and you'd think he would considering his interest in his bloodline.

I'm not saying they should report to Batman but have an actual relationship with Bruce and his kids. Did any of them meet? Kate talked about their family being cursed back in her Zero Year issue which made me wonder if she heard about Jason much less knew him. Wouldn't she find it funny that Nightwing just happened to be Dick Grayson? I'm surprised the DEO--who know who his cousins are--aren't looking into it more.

A few more things from the con.

Writing characters IN character

Yes everyone sees characters differently but there's a difference between having a headcanon that's never touched upon in canon and directly going against canon.

Corrected Titans Hunt Cover

I mentioned this before but the original cover had the wrong Robin suit. The first version of this cover had Jasons' and the new one has Dicks' suit. The other Titans next to him also have some changes to their costumes. I'm so happy they changed it. With the confusion over costumes lately I was beginning to worry.

NYCC Schedule?

Maybe we'll learn something interesting during this. There seems to be some things that aren't on the schedule since Harley Quinn has a panel today.

DC handling Cass

I was thinking about some of the last stories DC told with her before New 52/DCYOU. The horrible out of character and nonsensical assassin who despite struggling to read due to her brains' development somehow knew Navajo. Which led to them saying she was drugged and for some reason Dick blamed her for her actions while under the influence.

Bruce adopted her then she was sent to Hong Kong after following Batmans' instructions to give Stephanie the Batgirl mantle. Tim was the only one to really keep in contact with her although to be fair Stephanie didn't know how to reach her. Snyder did a Gates of Gotham which was supposed to star Cassandra when she got pushed into the background and met a jealous Damian. She never met Jason although they were both in Batman Inc.

Be careful with this one DC.

DC needs to retire this plot

Because we've had so many Batman keeps secrets and/or Batman is a jackass plots since the relaunch. None of them have ever been resolved in a satisfactory manner which makes it hard to buy anyone willingly working with him. Can't we just have mini series of Batman with the first three Robins written by people that know the characters inside out? Something to show why their family?

Seeley BaRE Interview

Found here. Thoughts below.

We Are Robin Interview

Here. Some thought below.

First look at Cassandra Cain?

On the cover of BaRE #3.

Funny thing, I was so distracted by "Cass" that it took me far too long to notice Dick. Then I was wondering who was next to him. Jason looks off but then again I don't remember him ever having glowing eyes outside BFTC. Still better than that ugly depiction in the preview for one. I know Daniels can draw him better because he has.

DC has Colonel Sanders fight his Evil Self

Yep, this appears to be happening though it's a con exclusive.

Is Alfred heading towards a mental breakdown?

I've heard two theories about Alfred:
1.) Bruce will fire him/force him to take time off
2.) He'll be killed.

Both of these ideas are being talked about because of Julias' role basically being to fill in for her dad. I have a third option: Alfred has a mental breakdown which could make him into a temporary villain. Why? Well DC loves to bring back old stories and he was turned into a bad guy in the far past. If not then he'll have a normal breakdown after he realizes what he's done and after all the stress has piled up. Think about what he's been through and done.

Five Great Robin (Jason Todd) Stories

Because DC once again shows it's bias. Not to mention this list makes no sense as one of these stories is fairly recent and the others are pretty well known. Tim is in his "graduated" ID and I'm pretty sure Dick becomes Nightwing in one of the stories listed. Since I haven't finished reading all of the Jason issues it doesn't seem fair to pick the best. Still here are some of the ones I enjoyed.

Booster Gold Vol. 1 goes Digital

The first volume finally comes onto digital starting with issues 1 and 2. Woo!

Why Spider-Girl is a great female series

I read this article about good role model female character titles that are boring. (Thanks for the link Dark Tzitzimine.) Which does seem to be the case with some of the newer series. While reading it I kept thinking how Spider-Girl wasn't anything like what's described. Yes the lead could be called a good role model for girls but she has flaws that are explored.

Updated Reading List for December

I pre-ordered some of Robin War so I'm now committed to getting it although I'll have to get some of the issues in my LCS. It hit me that this is the biggest haul I've gotten on my pull list in awhile.

Likable Villains

I was skimming comic stuff online when I found someone complaining about the concept of female villains "needing" to be likable. Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn were used as the examples. I don't think villains in general need to be likable but they need to be interesting. I always thought part of Harleys' appeal was her not being evil like the Joker. I'm indifferent to her and don't read her books so I could be wrong. My personal taste tends to like bad guys that have depth no matter the sex.

I think Killer Croc has risen to my favorite of the Gotham rogues because of his development and more sympathetic nature. Joker is important sure, he just doesn't interest me much. Straight up evil for evils' sake is okay every once in a while although it wears thin if everyone's like that.

Preview: Batman and Robin Eternal #1

Sadly no sign of Cassandra in this. I wanted a comic fix since my books won't be out for awhile.

SPOILERS AHEAD

Batman 66' Thoughts

I bought a few things from the Batman Day sale including Batman The Cult (which I have a physical copy of) Grayson (which I got solely to review) and this. The price was right as certain trades were only $ 3.99. Hopefully next year their have a bigger selection with different books.

So far I've only read the first story in this trade. Reading comics based on TV shows are tricky things because a lot is missing in the printed medium such as the acting and music. There are benefits though like being able to do bigger effects and making the characters do more impressive feats. There's nothing wrong with the first issue although I'll need to read more to give a better opinion.

I loved the art, it flows nicely, has good likeness of the actors and has a good style. Except for some of the blue outlining which looked like it was attempting to do one of those 3D effects. It hurt my eyes after a while.

Now Aquaman is added to the list

As seen here. Will it ever be properly addressed? Unlikely. But for the person I saw online that argued there was nothing wrong with it? Well I have something to say to that.

Preview: Batman Annual #4

DC has made Alfred into a jackass and an idiot if he thinks this will work.

Other Things Batman Did

Since all he seems to do recently is kept secrets and manipulate I thought it was a good time to remember some things he did before the relaunch.

Green Lantern Dolls

For Sally.

Yes, these exist although they're 8". The Mego line was big back in the day but it was very selective. There was a resurgence of interest which gave us another Hal and a Kyle. Now Hal, Kyle, John and Guy all have their own figures in this Retro-Action DC Super Heroes line. But no Hal below because he already gets enough attention.

Got back into sewing

I don't do it much and I'm certainly not talented at it but it can be fun. It's relaxing...until you make a mistake. Even so I enjoy the process of creating something. Remember when I tried to make the Supernova and Goldstar costumes? I found them and their worse than I remember. I didn't use the right fabric for the colored sections (I just used what I already had) and it warped or stiffen those parts. Well I'm self taught so I had no concept of what I was doing.

I was going to make my own 12" figures since the DC lines never get around to making my favorite characters. They seem to favor the same select few and/or it cost too much. Besides sewing the biggest hinderance was finding heads that looked like they would work for the characters. Proper male heads are far harder to find than female. You'd think there would be plenty of young attractive male faces that'd work. Anyway I'm looking for materials so I'll see if I can come up with anything.

Out of curiosity what character would you like to see that hasn't had a 12" figure?

Event Dullness

In recent years it's been:

  • Count of Owl/Night of Owls: I liked it okay.
  • Death of the Family: ...I liked the first RHATO tie in. But mostly this was just a mess.
  • Forever Evil: I think there were a few good moments but overall I couldn't help feeling bored.
  • Convergence: A few good moments but a whole lot of meh.

So you can see why I'm hesitate to jump onto the event train again even if some of my favorite characters are involved.

Batman and Robin Eternal Prologue

Released today as a 8 page story although one of those pages is the cover for #1.

SPOILERS AHEAD

Friday, September 25, 2015

Happy Batman Day!

I'm working so who knows if I can actually get to a store later on. Still deals are up on DCs' digital store. Including a selection of graphic novels for $3.99 each. Some of which I already have, a couple I might get and others I have zero interest in. These deals are nice but I would have preferred a wider selection of characters and Batman related titles. It helps promote books if they actually include them in their promotional celebration.

There's a free comic and while I haven't read it yet I have to admit I'm disappointed. I thought it was preview pages for future issues and a short story. Instead it's a reprint of part 1 of Endgame and a 8 page BaRE prologue.

My feelings on Jason Todd and Tim Drake

I talked a bit about this when there was a controversy over them being on okay terms.

There's still some arguing over this but my feelings on it are simple. Canon is different now and given the attention DC is giving Dick/Damian if Jason wasn't close to Tim then Tim would barely have any interaction with the family. I'd say Roy is closer to Jason than Tim anyway so it's not like they have that best of buds vibes just yet.

DC has been showing them interact more to the point their new friendship is beginning to get noticed by readers. They talked in BE, for some reason Dick decided to reveal himself to both of them and they have been sharing information for some time. I like it and it's actually been built up better than any of his other interactions with the bat kids.

Digital Batman Books

There's a some issues on sale for .99 cents although it feels a little uneven in terms of character selection. I was pleasantly surprised to see Cassandras' series. Golden Age Jerks

Judging by the covers all they did back then was mundane things or act dickish to Robin.

Superhero vs. Superhero

One of the old classics in comics that keeps coming back. Some might even say it's overused in events like Civil War. There's usually a disagreement, misunderstand or the villains force them to battle. Whether it's a good trope depends greatly on the writers execution. Most tend to turn these into a popularity contest (at least on forums) when other factors should be at play.

It varies whether I like these fights. They can be fun or a waste of time. If I'm honest I do kind of cringe when I hear about an impeding fight because my first thought is whether it will be written out of character. Whether or not a fight's even necessary for the story. In some cases you know what to expect which makes it pretty boring.

I think the only fights I ever looked forward to were Tim vs. Damian. Who I rooted for changed based on how it was written and their interaction is engaging. Now I don't think Damian should ever win against any of his adopted brothers but I could feel for him. I like that Tim actually calls Damian out on the crap he does. I can't say I'm excited by the prospect of anyone else fighting unless Bruce and a particular someone are humbled. I don't like the idea of some of the family going at it and some fights would be too predictable or biased for certain writers.

Legends Jason Todd

Not even nearly getting killed by an angry hero hating mob stops him. This has a much happier ending than you'd expect.

What characters do you need to read about?

This is sort of in line with a question I asked awhile ago about what titles you'd keep. Are there any characters you must have a book (with good characterzations naturally) of ?

I've had a number of them over the years. When the last ongoing title I got from Marvel ended (MC 2 Spider-Girl) I lost a lot of interest in Marvel superheroes. I've only gotten Spider-Girl or Scarlet Spider related issues since (which are few) and otherwise don't care.

Bill Finger Finally Gets Credit

It's about time, Batman wouldn't be what it is today without Finger.

Booster Gold movie huh?

I keep seeing conflicting reports so I'm going to just go with the flow and not get too excited yet. It's funny though because Boosters' first series had him developing his own movie and comic book series. As always Booster was ahead of his time. I wonder if their link the Rip Hunter connection.

A Blue Beetle/Booster Gold movie?

I haven't read this article yet but interesting, right?

Robin Year One and Batgirl Year One

After hearing a lot of hype for these stories I finally got around to reading them.

Jason gets through to Raven

Brother Blood has brainwashed Raven into thinking he's great and no one can snap her out of it. Except Jason when he shows her what BB did to her mother.

There's a lot of things I love about this simple moment. Jason is the one that decides to stay behind away from the fighting to look after Ravens' mom. Since we know what happens with his own mother it's heartbreaking. But what's really frustrating is that Geoff Johns later retcons the way things were. Saying that Raven warned Jason about his anger when he was one of the few that had it together during his Titan days. She owes him not the other way around!

Short Review: Doomed #4

Harley Quinn #20

After reading this I'm curious...why do people like Harley Quinn again? I was always pretty neutral towards her but at least she used to be likable. My sister enjoyed some of the older HQ issues prior to the relaunch so I have some idea how she used to act. Well besides the fact I watched all the animated Batman episodes and movies.

At least this has a Booster Gold cameo.

DC Solicits for December

We learned of Robin War and a whole lot of cancelled titles. Let's see what else we can talk about.

This is just depressing. So now there are no GLs that aren't Hal Jordan with a title?

The new list of cancelled books

I wonder what the new books their replacing these with will be. I was expecting Doomed because it stars all new characters and an updated minor character. Still I wanted it to last longer. Hopefully Reiser and Roman can show up in RHA at some point.

What are you doing Alfred?

Just to see if I got all of this straight. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

What's canon for new Booster?

I was just thinking of all the retcons and wondering how much is intact.

Booster was the same Booster from preboot now he's not.

The JLI Annual ignored/retconned most of the JLI series.

The Futures End and Convergence tie ins retconned things in the Annual. Do the All Star Western cameos fit in anywhere?

At present all I'm sure about is that the FE and Convergence issues are canon. Things are confusing even with time travel, we don't need more retcons.

Arrogance ?

One of the myths often spread about Jason is that he's arrogant. In fact Winick himself has used to this idea in UTRH, it's one of the descriptions given to Pre-Red Hood Jason. It's not really accurate. There have been retcons after his death to make him look bad. (*1) None of the ones I read ever gave me the impression that he's more arrogant than anyone else in the family.

DC Unleashes Robin War Solicits

And guess what? It's a bigger crossover than we thought. It's not just We Are Robin, RSOB and Gotham Academy. It's called Robin War for a reason.

SPOILER AHEAD

Red Hood/Arsenal #4

The guys end up in Gotham which means they have to deal with Robo-Bat. I'm not going to lie, I haven't been looking forward to this. I don't care for the Batman/Gordon concept and I'm not sure how that will go with him fighting our leads. Let's find out.

Someone else asks if Starfire is really dumb?

This only studies audience opinions and points out how the Starfire series doesn't feel like it continues from RHATO.

Not his costume

Once again we have another art mix up--unless DC really is deciding to switch Dick and Jasons' uniforms. This is Jason wearing Dicks' costume.

Recently Dick has been seen on the cover Titans Hunt wearing Jasons' costume. Come on people, get it right. It's really distracting and I hate to think Jason gets stuck with the worst uniform. The only thing right about the above image is the mask color, the yellow cape and the space between the shoulders/gloves. Dick was the one with the weird straps and the not-really-a-belt design that pointed to his crotch.

Donna abandons her leadership

She does so after she cracks under the stress and hands the responsibility of the team over to Robin.

Only this isn't Dick Grayson, it's Jason Todd who's on his very first mission with the team. The kid Donna keeps treating like Dick. It's a good issue with all the experienced members dealing with their own personal issues. The ridiculous nature of the Robin costume is even brought up.

Art vs. Writing

I've heard far too many excuse terrible writing because the art was amazing. I've also seen people refuse to get a title because the art wasn't good enough. There's certainly a balance that needs to be met with comics since their a visual story. A lot has to be conveyed in gestures and expressions that give the characters more personality. Even so I can't continue to buy a series if the writing is bad. Story and characterization are key for me. I would prefer good art but I think I'm also more lenient than some on different styles.

New Teen Titans Vol. 2 #20

As I mentioned previously Dick and Donna got into a nasty fight. He stormed off and Donna decided to get a team of Titans together. Unfortunately everyone but the rookie of the team are all dealing with personal problems that throws them off their game. This is the atmosphere Jason Todd enters on his first mission with the Titans. I'm surprised more people don't talk about this issue especially the fact Jason learns something about Roy before Dick does.

Batgirl Anniversary ?

It won't be as big as the 75th anniversay since Betty Kane became Batgirl in the early 60's but it'd be nice to have an event (with different writers) for Bette, Barbara, Cassandra and Stephanie. Maybe Kate and Kathy too. I'd have it focused on Bette and what her relationship with Kathy was like. Then build her up from there with the others getting sucked into the story. Unfortunately I think DC would have Barbara be the lead. I just want the original Bat-Girl to finally have the spotlight.

Tynion Interview for Batman and Robin Eternal

Because my concern for Cassandra is making me worried here's another interview.  Thoughts below.

Donna Troy vs. Nightwing

A.K.A. One of the times people forgot Dick can get nasty.

Will DC have Dick return to Nightwing or choose someone else?

This was the subject of some talk or at least who they think will use the ID next since Dick is a spy. I want him to return to the Nightwing persona especially since Cassandra Cain apparently won't be returning to her old IDs.

Does being associated with Batman limit story potential?

During Teen Titans there was some talk of Dick Grayson never being able to stand on his own if he remained Robin. He'd always be in the shadow of Batman. By becoming Nightwing Dick was able to mature and gain a bigger role in DCU. At one point he almost married Starfire and if he did a Nightwing series was going to launch from it. But the marriage plans fell through and editors wanted the character back in the bat books. For awhile his TT connections were downplayed much like his romance to Starfire in favor of bringing him back into the fold. Dick was noticbly the only original Titan than never settled down or had kids. In the present no one is allowed to even get married.

The relaunch has aged Dick down and while he isn't in the bat titles at the moment his past still plays a big role in his future. How this will be balanced once Titans Hunt is released should be interesting. Now let's assume that in a few years DC will allow marriage and kids to return...does anyone think any of Bruces' kids would be able to settle down? I don't. DC can be particular about their Batman brand and how the characters relate to him. They freaked out over how much Dick aged him and having one of his sons get married would unfortunately have the same results.

Whether or not the characters can grow on their own outside Batmans' influence depends greatly on editors allowing change to happen.

Max Allan Collins "Second Chances" Writer Interview

Talks about writing Jason Todd as Robin and dealing with the mess of a DC reboot. Thoughts below.

Titans Hunt Interview

Which confirms it takes place in current canon and things won't be exactly the same.

Brief Character Study: Killer Croc

I always got the impression the writers never knew what to do with Croc. Is he a cannibalistic monster or a misunderstood individual? I was happy to see the writers finally making him a more sympathetic character in the relaunch.

Batman Day Reminder

For those who (like myself) forgot it's on September 26. I have no idea what my LCS is doing but it could be fun...if I'm not working.

Tony Daniel talks about the Bat family

I'm not planning on getting Batman and Robin Eternal but this has a preview of the art. Plus Daniels talks about the bat kids and after his past writing them, well let's just say I was curious.

Thoughts about parts of the interview below.

What titles would you do?

I've been longing for another series to follow and thinking what could fill the gap. Here's some ideas:

  • Time Masters/Booster Gold: I've been over this a few times but it needs to star Booster, Rip, Skeets and Michelle.
  • Magic Title: I'm not sure what but I loved Sword of Sorcery, Demon Knights, and some of JLD. I'd really love to see something done with the first two series. Mystic U was delayed without us ever getting details. It might be interesting.
  • Batwoman: With a new writer because I miss the old Kate. And if their not going to use Bette let someone else use her.
  • Robin Chronicles: I really feel like these stories need to be told of Dick, Jason and Tims' Robin days. It feels like we're missing a lot. With the right writer this could be amazing.
  • New Superhero: I really like Doomed and how it created a new character to follow. It even has a pretty obscure one making a return. It's fun to see new blood and I welcome the chance to have more new series. I just need to be sold on the concept and creative team.
That's all I can think of at the moment. I'd like different takes for certain characters that I don't like being revamped but that's another list. I might also like to see something done after Titans Hunt depending on how good it is.

Any Writers You Boycott ?

I always see comments about being supportive to favorite creators. But has there either been a writer or writers that for whatever reason you can't stand to the point you refuse to buy anything with their name on it ? That you don't want to see writing your favorite characters ? Or hope someone undoes the damage they created ?

New Booster Gold Series ?

Honestly this is just a rumor for now since it currently has no source but I'm kinda desperate for comic news on Booster. At least any news that doesn't have to do with JL3001. If this is true Jurgens might not be involved since he's on Batman Beyond. I'm curious how it would be done since everything we thought we knew got turned on its head.

DC have been attempting to do something with Booster for awhile although plans seem to have changed more than once. So even if the rumor is true it doesn't mean they can't fall through. There are a lot of loose ends from Convergence that need to be explored. Skeets needs to be there and so does Rip. And oddly enough the new Boosters' origin needs to be explained since we don't know who hired him and who was working on the time sphere. We may be in for a surprise.

DC taking drastic measures?

I heard that DCYOU wasn't doing so well but yeesh! To sum up it's speculated that DC might cut it's losses by reducing page rates, more ads, canceling titles (this was a given) and more of a focus on trades. Which could be bad for certain writers that don't want to write 6 issue arcs for trades. Creators were also told to stop "Batgirling" so many titles which is great but I mainly want them to undo what happened to Starfire. It also looks like Jim Lees' claim that canon matters more than continuity might not be the case anymore. I really don't want BE to have anymore focus outside the series so this could really suck.

Aspects of these stories have also been confirmed by ex-DC editor Heidi MacDonald, who added her own take, regarding co-publisher Dan Didio, saying “the tone of the DC You books was definitely not his decision. However I’ve heard from multiple sources that with the “Nü Look DC” failing to excite retailers and readers, DiDio’s way is making a comeback. It’s still early on all this—although some of the ideas I’ve heard being floated around are shocking—so it’s too soon to tell if this means a return to a tightly interwoven overarching continuity or just a return to DC’s house style.”

Pre-ordering Online and Digital Comis

I've been far too into this for the last few months. It makes me feel a little guilty for not going to my LCS. I have gone to a store recently to buy a couple issues of Robin SOB because I had a coupon but other than that I can't remember when I last went to a comic store. Maybe Free Comic Day? It's just so convenient to buy comics digitially to read seconds after purchase or pre-ordering issues online at a reduced price.

The store I go to is nice but it's also out of the way. Sometimes their out of something I want or the shipment is late. During DC villains' month the special covers were the only ones that came in and they were selling them at $12 and up despite them barely being marked up online (I think it was $3.99.) It's a pleasant enough atmosphere but I rarely have time to take it all in and explore everything. I have left a spot for me to visit them but it won't be until November.

But then again maybe I shouldn't feel too bad about not supporting them as much as I used to since my pull list has always been pretty. Most of their regulars have stacks so big they have tabs.

Scott Snyders' dangling Plot Thread

Remember back around Black Mirror when Dick was Batman and went to an evil auction ? Well he did and it turned out they were selling a particular item Dick felt compelled to take. After he passed out Tim found him and Alfred asked what to do with the item. You know, the item with brain matter, blood and tissue on it that was used to beat one of them bloody ? I'm not saying it wasn't a good storyline it just felt pointless to have the crowbar around if they weren't going to address the elephant in the room. Or let Jason decide.

Scott Snyder: Last thing - that's what I was thinking. I considered having him ask Jason, but that's a whole can of worms I don't think Dick wants to go anywhere near. So what to do with it? It was important to me (as someone who remembers vividly calling in from a pay phone to decide Jason's fate) that the crowbar not disappear during the fight in Mirror House.

I wanted it to have a kind of burial or at least get some kind of reverent moment from Dick. I'm not sure Alfred will actually throw it in the river (though that's a scene I'd love to write for its quiet drama) but I just felt that that's what Dick would say at that moment. Like no more reverence for objects like these (given what just happened at Mirror House). You know?

Thoughts about this below.

New Reading List

A lot of new things to look forward to in the coming months.

Nathan Fillon wants to be Booster Gold

I'm always happy to see the characters I like get some love and I'm fond of Nathan's performances...I just can't see him as Booster.

On the bright side my mom heard of this although I don't think she was listening when I explained part of Boosters' origin. I told my dad about Booster awhile back but he keeps saying, "that's a stupid name." You know none of my causally-interested-in-comics friends mind the name or the origin. They don't even question it.

...Although my sister and my brother in-law were inappropriately amused when they learned of Skeets name.

How much do the super villains know?

Does Batmans' rogues gallery suspect his identity or the IDs of the other Robins since Nightwing was unmasked?

I don't remember if they knew Red Robin was the former Robin in last canon but they should know now.

Villains have taunted Batman over Robins' death (Damian) so do they still believe he died and think there's another new Robin?

What do they think is the connection between Red Hood and the bat family? Everyone has to know about the events of UTH. Do they think this is another Red Hood? Does anyone besides Joker (and some of the villains that know Bruces' ID) know this is the Robin he killed? I don't think Joker would let anyone know since he's always gloated about killing a Robin.

I'd love to read an issue of the villains arguing over what they believe is true to get a better perspective.

The Implications of Titans Hunt

It seems that Titans Hunt takes place in DCnU which has heroes that seemingly forget the history of the Titans before Tim creates his own team. Let's discuss whether this can work in canon.

Straight about of Gotham

A parody rap with Two-Face, Riddler and Joker rapping. Bits from the comics are mentioned too.

Bat-Characters that I'd like to get

I have made a list of figures I'd like to get made awhile ago and some are on this list. But with DCC still going back to the same character selection and Robins 75th anniversary taking place it bears repeating. That said there are some new additions to the list too.

Doomed #3

This is a fairly new series with new characters which means just about anything can happen to it's cast. I'm still unsure what direction it will take and that's usually fun.

Guys' best friend?

I'm still reading through Red Lanterns when Guy calls John his best friend. I thought that was Kyle. Did that change since the reboot? GL history seems more or less intact with Guy first becoming a RL because of what happened to Kyle so they were still close.

DC Solicits for November

Nothing new seems to be coming out but that doesn't mean there isn't anything to talk about.

Happy Birthday Jason Todd!

If my metas were written out I'd post them but their not. There's another month until the next issue of Red Hood/Arsenal so I might read more post-Crisis Robin Jason and do more reviews.

As for Roy, well tomorrow is August 17th and I believe that's Lians' birthday.

Got the 1st Guy Gardner Red Lanterns trade

Because I'm only interested in the series after Guy turns up. I'm enjoying it and like Guy I'm getting mighty annoyed with Hal. I'm glad I trade waited so I have all this to read although it's still weird to realize canon has changed for Guy.

DC Universe/Batman Guide Books

I used to get these books years ago when I was into Marvel and I have a few Star Wars books too. These guides tell you how something works, who characters are, all kinds of details. I haven't gotten any DC guide books because of the bias in the character section. It's really annoying to the point I want to create my own. Because I shouldn't be reading from a character POV that's different from canon and dislike how said character comes off.

Roy Harpers' Behavior Part 2

Where Roy gets a bit reckless, thoughtless and one has to wonder what's going on.

Character Study: Crux/Simon Amal

Due to editorial mandated tie ins, etc. Simon doesn't have too many appearances under his belt. Despite this he still managed to get some good character development.

Arrow and Flash Tease Booster Fans

Here are best parts:

“The show will contain elements of Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis’ Justice League International run,” said Guggenheim on the tone of the show. Guggenheim also mentioned Dan Jurgens’s 2011 Time Masters: Vanishing Point, which he calls “a good series for its depiction of Rip Hunter and a crazy combination of characters."

And for the obvious question of the Booster/Rip dynamic:

“I wish I could tease a Booster thing but, you might have to wait a good long while at least on our show. Perhaps Booster is being groomed for bigger things."

Every Time I want to get Fables...

I hear something else about Willingham that puts me off. Well I was never fond of what he did to Steph but I assumed most of it was editorial.

Batmans' Arrogance

Just a few of the things Bruce was a little too arrogant on that have or will likely blow up in this face.
