Happy New Year !

I had some good comics and a lot of bad ones this year. I think we all know Robin War is at the top of the bad and since I already wrote why I'll just say it's for a good reason. With one issue left nothing can save it. I'd like to focus on the positive instead.

This year gave me an excellent mini series in Back to the Future which is now an ongoing thanks to popular demand. While editorial mandates has messed with the momentum in Red Hood/Arsenal there was still a lot of good character work for both leads. Gotham Academy was mostly decent even if it feels like it's running out of steam at the moment. Green Lantern Lost Army was pretty good. Doomed was very underrated and a lot of fun with two amazing characters in Reiser and Roman.

I enjoyed most of the Star Wars books I read including the main series, Darth Vader (which had an epic moment of him realizing who Luke was) and Kanan The Last Padawan. We got another Star Wars movie (I'll elaborate on that at a later point) and more on the way.

I'm hoping for next year to be better and for us all to have more excellent comics.

Robin Son Of Batman #7

We had a good tie in and ONE good issue of this Robin War event in We Are Robin #7. A six part event where only a single part has been enjoyable isn't a good sign for a story. Fawkes does the dialogue for this and since he did part 3 (Detective Comics) that doesn't feel like a good sign either.

We Are Robin #7

Thus far everything that I read that's Robin War related has been horrible except for Red Hood/Arsenal #7 which was a tie in that actually had Jason acting in character. While brief it celebrated what it meant to be a Robin and maturely addressed his past with Tim. Which I don't think anyone else has done in the relaunch. Now I'm not a fan of the concept of We Are Robin nor the interviews I read which didn't seem to get the Robin legacy. Still I heard this was another bright spot in an otherwise abysmal event. Even if it's nothing but chatting together for the whole comic it'd be better than the other three parts.

Short Review: Titans Hunt #3

Yep I got my last comics of the year. I forgot that this was coming in the mail. It's been so long since I read the last issue that I forgotten what it's like reading this series. I remember the plot it's just the style of writing that's kinda blurry. What can I say, I read worst and that made this one a little forgettable in comparison.

Star Wars Marathon

I'll be able to see The Force Awakens soon but I'm planning on seeing the other six before I see the new movie. It's a good time to be a fan.

Happy Birthday Stan Lee!

The closest I came to meeting him was being at the same con as him. Everyone heard he was there and you couldn't even move in any direction unless the wave of people around you was heading there. It was the most unbearable con I've ever been at but people love Stan that much.

Any comic book resolutions ?

I'm thinking of a few:

  • Not getting titles with certain writers unless it can't be avoid. (For example if they took over a series I'm getting. Then they get a short period to win me over.)
  • When an event happens don't get it unless: it's only a couple of extra issues or wait until it's over to see how if turned out.
  • Try out a new series?

That's all I got for now.

A Year of Comics I read in 2015

Sadly there were A LOT of disappointing and bad comics this year. There were also some bright spots that are worth mentioning. If I get WAR and RSOB before the new year and feel like their worth mentioning here I'll add them.

I hope everyone has a Happy Holiday! I got some great stuff and I hope everyone likes what I got them too.

Red Hood/Arsenal #7

I made it to the editors' note before I stopped to read Robin War #1. We already have continuity problems with this event and criminally bad characterization. This is just a tie in although it's the last connection to Robin War I have before I get the WAR and RSOB issues in a week or so. Depending on the delay since they haven't shipped yet.

Detective Comics #47

Well Grayson #15 officially got rid of the excitement I had for this event. I have little hope left but the spect I have is because we have different writers for the next three partners not including tie ins. Let's see if the trend of crap continues.

Robin War part 1-3 Summary

To sum up the three issues I've read so far and how I feel about this event.

No real spoilers

Grayson #15

Taking place right after Robin War #1. For some reason it has the WAR kids, Tim and Damian on the cover in Owl masks without Jason and Dick. Still an excellent cover I just wish we got all the Robins together. It would have been awesome.

Robin War #1

I was going to start with Red Hood/Arsenal but the editor notes said it takes place during this.

DC making ongoing titles bi-monthly?

Last time I went to a message board this was a topic being discussed so the idea stuck with me. Honestly I don't think I'll care unless it affects something on my pull list. Still it's interesting.

More figures

Captain America Civil War figures and a Star Wars The Force Awakens poster using figures including a new Leia!

DC Digital Graphic Novels sale

Including Batman Noel and Booster Gold vol. 2 trades for $5.99

Who was Black Beetle?

We never got the answer and unless he turns up in something Jurgens does it seems unlikely we ever will. I don't think I ever talked about my theory. Let's look at the clues and I'll try to explain why I don't think it would be a more obvious choice.

Batman/Superman #27

I didn't care for a chunk of last issue and this one was the one I had been looking forward to.

Because of Convergence Booster Gold...

This is a lot more sinister.

You wouldn't think that would be possible.

Back to the Future #3

I was surprised that this mini series suddenly went from a four parter to a five parter but according to IDW there was enough demand that their going to have an ongoing series ! I wonder if the adventures will continue from the third movie on or fill in more blanks. Maybe their do both. More information will be available "very soon" so it's likely sometime after this mini ends.

I FINALLY got my comics

I understood that there would be delays when I pre-ordered online and knew they would come a bit late due to the holiday season. I was just a little worried when I started to wonder if my order got lost. Usually this type of order would come in a couple days after the release date thanks to the big trade set I got upping the s/h and this was longer than I expected even with the delay in mind. Thankfully I got my biggest comic stash of the month just before Christmas. I'm working for the next few days so we'll see if I'll be able to put up many reviews.

I think I have the Robin War books in the proper reading order with Red Hood/Arsenal taking place before the others. Fingers crossed that I like this event. I should be getting the next two installments at the end of the month with the last coming in the new year. No idea how I'll feel about Batman/Superman although I'm fairly confident I'll love Back to the Future. I ordered Uncle Scrooge thinking it was a different run but it still looks like a nice set. It should be fun.

Upcoming 12" Movie Figures

From Star Wars The Force Awakens and Batman vs. Superman. I want to get Rey, BB 8 and Finn but their so expensive. In the above $200 range.

Event thoughts

I'm still waiting for my comics but I've been thinking about crossovers. In general I'm tired of them because there are too many, they often only have characters that aren't my favorite or tiny unimportant roles for those that are my favorites. Lately they have been expensive and boring.

What I'd like is for a crossover to make sure everyone is in character in every book, the story matches up and the characters' personalities being used in interesting ways. Most recent events seem to be very paint by numbers and I want that fun feeling back. The allies vs. allies bit can be interesting but it's overused. More often than not it feels forced.

I was looking at some of the titles listed for Free Comic Book Day and while DC hasn't listed theirs yet I realized I wasn't looking forward to it. I wasn't interested in any of the storylines DC have been promoting in for FCD the last few years. Which is sad because I always look forward to FCD stuff.

The Delusions of Alfred Pennyworth

I thought it had a slight Christmas Carol feel to it although it can be read anytime. We don't often get this kind of insight into Alfred and I found this very sweet. From Gotham Knights # 34

Days of Christmas: Jason Todd takes a Sleigh to meet Santa

I did a meta and a review for this one. I think this was without a doubt the most entertaining issue of the series. How could it not be with mini Outlaws. Red Hood and the Outlaws Annual #2

Days of Christmas: Kids try to convince J. Jonah Jameson Spider-Man is a hero

Another entry from the Marvel Holiday Special. While J. Jonah Jameson does decide to do a good deed there's one thing he has trouble budging on: Spider-Man. A Spider-Man Carol.

Days of Christmas: Spider-Girl ponders the holidays

My theme with my choices might seem odd by now. I'm pretty much choosing short and/or lesser known issues. This one starts with a Parker Christmas tradition May shares with her uncle: beating up a gang of criminals dressed as Santa. Spider-Girl #54

Thursday, December 10, 2015

Days of Christmas: Scarlet Spider beats up a bunch of Santas

Scarlet Spider (Kaine Parker) is trying to make something of his life since he's no longer dying and attempting to reform after being a supervillain. But a recent disaster leaves him depressed yet somehow this issue manages to be so much fun.

Days of Christmas: Spider-Man Meets Nate Grey

This might seem like an odd choice but there's a good reason for this. This came out around the time I was getting into comics, it had two heroes meeting for the first time and dealt with loss. It made an impression. Amazing Spider-Man #420.

Days of Christmas: Joker takes a joyride with Tim

Anytime a Robin is left alone with the clown there's a sense of dread. This time's no different as Paul Dini writes this story in Detective Comics # 826.

Green Lantern Edge of Oblivion art

It's wonderful and seeing it helped get me excited for the series.

Cheap DC Doll Option?

1/6 figures are expensive with the lowest being in the hundreds. Sometimes companies make clothing to sell by it's self but say you want to have a certain character and you don't want to spend triple digits. Well in some cases you can but there are catches.

Days of Christmas: The X-Men run into a new mutant

From the Marvel Holiday Special trade I have with which doesn't say if these are all reprints (which I assumed they were) or where they would come from. I'm pretty much done with Marvel superheroes except MC2 Spider-Girl and Scarlet Spider (both rarely appear.) I do remember this trade fondly and this story stood out.

Days of Christmas: Lil' Gotham

I'll be honest, this isn't my favorite Lil' Gotham story. I would have liked it better if it focused on the family. That doesn't mean it doesn't have any merit.

Karl Kerschl Leaves Gotham Academy

Ending issue #12. I really enjoyed his art on the book and it feels odd to think of the series without him. I'll definitely miss seeing his work.

Days of Christmas: Booster gives Dick Grayson a Reminder

Another one where the holiday has very little to do with the plot and is only briefly seen. Since this is also written and drawn by Dan Jurgens it's not surprising.

Batman Telltale game

Much like Game of Thrones, The Wolf Among Us and Walking Dead we are getting a telltale Batman game. I wonder if their do anything extreme like show what would happened if he killed.

Robin issues on sale

For digital comics, mostly Dick and Tim comics. A few WAR issues yet Damian oddly seems to be the official Robin with the least amount of comics in the sale.

Days of Christmas: Booster Gold goes home

I don't know if I'll get 12 days but this is a look at Christmas/Holiday issues. I'm not going over the entire issue if I reviewed it before. Sometimes the story only has it in the background much like Booster Gold #13-15 volume 1.

The New Teen Titans #27

I reviewed an issue of this arc before and hoped to get the begininng of it. I missed the mark as this still isn't isn't it. Blood has Raven and Nightwing while the Titans (Donna, Kory, Jason, Gar, Vic and Joey) try to find them while taking on the Brotherhood of Evil.

Delayed Reviews

I'm going to have some late reviews this month for the newer comics due to waiting for them to be mailed or being too busy to go the store. I'm not sure if I'll review RHA before I get the other issues since I get it digitally. I think I won't have Robin War #1 until a week or maybe two. I might review some of the older back issues I brought in the meantime.
