DC Solicits for October 2020

I haven't been reading many comics lately as stuff in my life needed more attention. But that just means I have more comics to read later.

BATMAN BEYOND #48
written by DAN JURGENS
art by SEAN CHEN
cover by DAN MORA
variant cover by FRANCIS MANAPUL
ON SALE 10/27/20
$3.99 US | 32 PAGES | FC | DC
"First Contact" begins! Something is very, very wrong with Bruce Wayne, as he lashes out in anger and tries to kill Batman Beyond! Who else can save him but...Booster Gold?! The greatest hero history never knew is going to take Batman Beyond back in time to the Gotham of old, where Bruce Wayne is Batman—which means Batman and Batman Beyond will meet at last!

I don't read Batman Beyond but I'll get it since it has Booster Gold in it and looks like he'll actually be written in character. I hope it ignores the HIC stuff but I sort of doubt it.

DETECTIVE COMICS #1029
written by PETER J. TOMASI
art and cover by KENNETH ROCAFORT
card stock variant cover by LEE BERMEJO
ON SALE 10/27/20
$3.99 US | 32 PAGES | FC | DC
CARD STOCK VARIANT COVER $4.99 US
After the City of Bane, the Riddler's takeover, The Joker War, and more, the people of Gotham City have had enough. The world is changing for Bruce Wayne, and the question he must ask himself is: What role does the Batman have in a city that rejects him? As the year barrels forward into what will become a turning point for the Dark Knight, Batman must grapple with the very citizens he has sworn to protect...while a familiar face looms large as a new threat on the horizon: Damian Wayne!

I don't know why DC has to keep going back to the "A Robin goes bad" plot with Jason and Damian. Who knows if Jason will go there with the Outlaw period ending but it doesn't look like it will be ending anytime soon for Damian. Is this linking up with the Doomsday Clock stuff now that Gotham rejected Batman?

WONDER WOMAN #764
written by MARIKO TAMAKI
art by STEVE PUGH
cover by DAVID MARQUEZ
card stock variant cover by JOSHUA MIDDLETON
Wonder Woman 1984 variant cover by ADAM HUGHES
ON SALE 10/13/20
$3.99 US | 32 PAGES | FC | DC
CARD STOCK VARIANT COVER $4.99 US
Wonder Woman and Max Lord are on the hunt for some missing and extremely dangerous weaponry from Lord Industries, and the search has brought this unlikely duo to…Miami? Fun in the sun will have to wait—because if Diana and Max can't uncover this illegal arms trade, the entire city could be blown sky high! But we're sure Max Lord will be nothing but helpful…right?

While I can't get myself excited about more Max Lord in Wonder Woman (it lacks the appeal of him dealing with the JLI and tends to make him more villainous) I love the Kooey Kooey Kooey parody cover.

RED HOOD: OUTLAW #50
written by SCOTT LOBDELL
art by PAOLO PANTALENA
cover by DEXTER SOY
variant cover by PHILIP TAN
ON SALE 10/27/20
$5.99 US | 48 PAGES | FC | DC
Jason Todd's downward spiral began when he was murdered by The Joker. But deep in his heart he blamed himself for charging headfirst into deadly danger. His rage and self-loathing caused him to lash out at those around him—keeping friends and family alike at arm's length. Until the Outlaws. First Arsenal and Starfire, and later, Artemis and Bizarro, saw through his defenses. Now it's time to pay it forward to the one person who represents all the mistakes he's made in his own life: Duela Dent. But can he save The Joker's Daughter...when he couldn't even save himself? Don't miss the end of the Outlaw era!

I know solicits aren't always to be taken literally but the wording bugs me on this one. 1.) Jason might blame himself for his death but he didn't charge headfirst into danger. He approached his mother as Jason Todd, trusted her and she betrayed him. 2.) He might keep his friends and family at arms length (debatable and depends on the situation) but for the most part he hasn't lashed out. Not with his friends and not for some time with the family. The last few times I read where the family and him clashed had to do with them not trusting him. In those instances he wasn't even guilty of what they accused him of.

While I don't loath the Duela stuff like others do I really would have preferred the series ending on a different note. It feels like if he can't save her then this is just an easy out to explain whatever darker take DC decides to take with the character. If he does save her then would that even stick? I'm just not that excited to see this series end and see what DC does with the character(s) afterward.

TEEN TITANS #46
written by ROBBIE THOMPSON
art by EDUARDO PANSICA
cover by BERNARD CHANG
card stock variant cover by PEACH MOMOKO
ON SALE 10/20/20
$3.99 US | 32 PAGES | FC | DC
CARD STOCK VARIANT COVER $4.99 US
With Damian Wayne renouncing his role as Robin and leaving the Teen Titans behind, Jon Kent returns from the future and the Legion of Super-Heroes to ask the remaining Titans some tough questions about his best friend. And when Superboy asks questions—he demands answers.

At least someone is demanding answers, I really expected Batman to show up more after the truth of Damian's misdeeds is known. I wonder if Jon will realize how badly Damian screwed up or shift the blame to the team. Granted they all messed up in various ways but I don't want this to ignore what Damian did. If this was any other TT line up I'd expect the JL to all show up to make sure everyone got punished or at least supervised.

After so many fake outs I can't get too excited to see Nightwing back. It's nice but it took far too long. I know the situation with Ted Kord and the Suicide Squad might be a fake out but I'm still surprised they went with a funny cover given the situation. Ted even seems to be smiling as the team attack him. Wait, the Three Jokers trade is out one month after the last issue is released? I might catch up on Star Wars comics or read some back issues after this month. It depends on what the next solicits and issues bring.

  1. I don't think RHATO is ending, the solicit doesn't specify Series Finale as the Batgirl, Batman & The Outsiders and JLO do, rather, the writing is closer to Nightwing's in that is only announcing the end of an era and the prelude to a new one. Of course, it is possible issue 51 IS the end for RHATO bu again, I doubt it based on the wording of the solicit.

    1. The era is and that's still a big change for me. Especially since many writers still write Jason in a less than flattering manner.
