Action Comics #993

Also known as the return of Booster Gold !

I haven't reviewed the previous arc although I did buy and read it. To sum up Superman found out that the mysterious Mr. Oz was in fact his biological father Jor-El. Oz/Jor was somehow saved from death and forced to witness mankind at it's worse. He gave select people the option of good or evil actions in several different scenarios and they chose evil.

Clark broke his staff--which kept the kryptonite lodged in his face from killing him--and Oz was abducted by the being that saved him. (Not said but we readers already assume it's Dr. Manhattan.) He goes to the GL Corps for answers by looking into the records for how Jor-El survived only to find them corrupted. In an act of desperation he uses Flash's cosmic treadmill to find the answers and Booster arrives too late to stop him.

Remember when Booster was the rash one? Well now he has to keep Clark from destroying the past. He explains in his narrative that someone is tampering with time which made it harder for them to arrive before Superman used the treadmill. Skeets also confirms that arriving at a precise moment is already a difficult enough feat. Barry shows up to be an ass instead of asking why Booster is messing with the treadmill. Here's a common sense fact Flash: Booster can't use it because he doesn't run fast enough. He also brought his own time machine. Use your head Barry. Although I'm a little bit amused that Clark is the careless one and Booster gets the blame.

Clark sees images of two different timelines as Booster continues to fight a jerky Barry. Skeets hacks into the JL security and takes him out. Booster takes the treadmill with them locate Superman and gets Skeets to promote him on social media. I don't know if that's done to help with his facade since it doesn't sound like it.

Lombard is apparently a Booster Gold fan. For a moment I thought it was Dirk but still cool. Jon doesn't know who Booster is and apparently Clark already soured him on the concept of anyone being a hero that market's themselves. I like the reasons Lombard likes him as he sees Booster being more relatable. He notes that Booster is someone that is just a regular guy in a power suit that gets by on his guts. Sadly Jon isn't interested at all.

Jon overhears Perry talking to Lois about her dad. It seems that he disowned her years before Jon was born for apparently blowing a secret program. Perry got news on her dad and it's not good. He was captured, the government claims he's a rogue agent and he's going to be executed. Lois refuses to let her dad die.

Time has changed and Booster arrives before Clark can get himself killed. Booster ponders out loud how much thought Superman gave the mission before he took off. Apparently none since Booster has to remind him that he can get hurt because Krypton has a red sun.

Overall: I liked most of this issue although Barry was annoying and I have no idea what's up with Booster. Which Booster is this? What's his history? Does he really want to be known as a great hero? How does the time travel bit fit in?

As this arc expands on the concept of Clark trying to understand his father and thus himself I'm really excited about the plot Lois has about her father. It's great that Jon can also learn more about his family although I'm still not sure how Supergirl's plot factors into this canon.

The role reversal with Booster being the sensible experienced one and Clark the emotional rash one is incredible. I love the little twists Jurgens always put into their relationship. The previous pettiness that turned into respect. While it might not happen I'd love for Clark to introduce Jon to Booster and get him to change his perception. Hopefully their relationship didn't get a reboot. The Lombard part was confusing but I adore seeing a Booster fan that likes him for the right reason.

I'm looking forward to more and I'm so happy to see a Jurgens drawn Booster.

Questions Raised?: Where does Barry Freaking Allen a.k.a. the breaker of time, get off calling Booster Gold a neophyte? Even if he doesn't know about all of Booster's experiences Booster doesn't have the history of screwing up that Barry does. In fact Booster is the one that told Barry what to do to get out of Flashpoint. Or is he just remembering the time Booster was drunk and crashed the time sphere into the treadmill?

Was Booster about to reveal his Time Master status before he mentions Superman?

I asked this in New 52 and it still needs to be answered but why is Booster's real name/history common knowledge?!

"Gold nuggets jockstrap" what the hell is with your name branding Booster? And of all the items Lombard could get autographed why did he get that ?

Say What?: Clark calls Oz a psychopath when he previously saw him as a confused, sick man that needed help and was being used as a puppet.

Clark says here and in the previous arc that only his ship was ever made. Then how did Kara survive?

Skeets keep off of tumblr and don't let Booster go on either.
