Throwing out a theory or two

Possible SPOILERS AHEAD for Heroes In Crisis

Red Hood and the Outlaws has this solicited for #27:

Everything changed for the Red Hood last issue. This time around, everything changes for Jason Todd! Devoid of partners and exiled from Gotham City, Jason gets a fateful message from the last person he expected to see again. The news he learns leaves him with no choice but to don the Red Hood mask once more and double down on his two-fisted crimefighting approach. Pray for whoever gets in Jason's way as 'The Outlaw' kicks into high gear.

Most of us already suspect Roy Harper is going to be one of the victims from the HIC event. Given a recent interview from Lobdell it seems extremely likely that #27 of RHATO will be when Jason hears the news of his best friend's death. Lobdell has said writing it made him emotional. When the solicit was first released a bunch of guesses were given out for the identity of the person who sends a message for Jason. Here's the ones I saw and what I think is the likelihood.

Batman: It's too soon after Bruce treated him worse than his rogues gallery. There needs to be more of a build up before they meet again.

Penguin: He might want to mess with Jason especially if he remembers who he is. I could only see this if he's manipulating him.

Nightwing: It would be fitting that Dick reached out to Jason. Which would be a nice gesture from a brother and someone also grieving the loss of a friend. I'm unsure if Dick will get involved though.

Solitary: I'm sure this confrontation is coming but since I feel pretty confident this issue will deal with Roy's death I don't think it will happen here.

I'd like two add two more possibilities.

Killer Croc: We did see him in Roy's "farewell issue" where he encouraged Roy to seek help. It would be kind of poetic since Waylon would likely feel guilt for getting Roy to go and as soon as he could. Much like I assume Jason will feel guilty for not going with him. Waylon also had a pep talk with Jason in the SS arc.

This might be stretching it since Waller gloated that she'll have Red Hood working for her making contact harder. Plus it'd mean he'd hear about it when the rehab center is a superhero secret. Of course Harley is his co-worker and she'll be there. (Not sure how that works with the SS stuff.) It would make it all the sadder if Croc tells Jason instead of a family member.

Green Arrow: It was VERY noticeable that GA will have a HIC tie in and was the first time outside a Red Hood title that an ongoing acknowledged it's canon. Recently Roy compared his partnership with Ollie with Jason. He spoke highly of Jason when Ollie didn't think much of him. Ollie saw Jason as "damaged" which is ironic given the context of the HIC links. In fact Roy didn't want to tell Ollie where he was going. Technically he didn't since Ollie didn't know about the rehab for capes.

I think it could be touching for both parties if Ollie made the effort to inform Jason personally. Not just because it shows Ollie honoring Roy's friendship but it  kind of meta too. Jason just lost his adopted dad while Ollie lost his son.

  1. It's going to be Bruce.

Dick is going to be involved in big accident from what recent spoilers have revealed (and neither Tim or Damian are currently available). It makes zero sense for Penguin to try to reach Jason or even able to do so (how would he even know about Roy dying or his relationship with Jason?). Killer Croc wouldn't be the last person Jason would expect to see again (also, how would he know?). Ollie will be too grief stricken to try to reach Jason (also, I don't think he is the last person to see again. It wouldn't make sense for Solitary to reveal himself after all this time just to tell Jason that Roy died.

  2. What makes you say that? Isn't he supposed to be involved in solving the murder case? Plus he's still not in a good place emotionally or mentally to be contacting the kid he beat up. I can't see them meeting given their current estrangement.

I heard about the accident but when I wrote this no one outside of DC knew what happened. I doubted it (Dick informing him) some. I'd like it to be true though.

I didn't think Penguin was likely either but like most of the others it was mentioned before we figured out Roy was endangered.

"Last person he expected to see" is kind of a loose phrase since it's a solicit but why would he expect to see Croc much less be contacted by him? It would come out of no where. If Harley contacted him out of desperation or if he was asked if she contacted him by Batman & co. Not saying it would happen but it could be interesting.

On a related note I'm not sure how a woman with a bomb in her body can disappear off of Wallers' radar and wouldn't pose a threat because of the bomb. I could be missing something there.

I could see Ollie doing it if he felt Roy would want him too.
