Relaunch Questions
Relationships between characters have changed and in some cases we have no idea what certain characters mean to each other now. So my questions are: Would you buy a comic you usually don't get in order to read about a character you like? Or get a issue of something you don't pick up in order to see how these characters interact now? I've heard that Max Lord will be appearing in Omac for example. And that Green Arrow will interact with Black Canary and Roy (I think he's Arsenal now?) at some point. I'm not sure if I would for those but if Booster appeared in Omac WITH Max? Oh yes.

I would want to depending on the characters, but it would all depend on what is going on in the current books I am picking up. If it is just a random one off of the character I probably wouldn't.
ReplyDeleteTrue. I want to know how the characters in RHATO interact with important people from their past for example. I'm not sure if I would buy Green Arrow but I'd love to see GA in the book.
ReplyDeleteI tend to buy series to either follow a character or because of the writer. Saying that, I bought the last Zatanna series because I like the character but didn't bother with JL Dark because I really dislike Peter Milligan's writing. However, if a poor writer joins a title I'm getting, I'll stick with it - Felicia Henderson's run on Teen Titans for example - because I like the characters.
ReplyDeleteSorry if that rambled a bit!
I agree with you on a poor writer joining a series I really like. I will continue to read. Sometimes a great writer will get me to try something different, but not always.
ReplyDeleteIf a favorite character of mine shows up in a book that I don't ordinarily read, will I buy it? In a heartbeat!
ReplyDeleteI have NO plans to read Voodoo on a regular basis, but I hear that Kyle Rayner is going to show up soon, so I'll pick it up for that.
Gary: True. Two of the books I plan to stick with for the long run have characters I adore and follow. I think it would depend on how big the cameo is too. I don't want to buy Deathstoke and see Booster for one panel. Milligan can be rather hit or miss. I saw panels of Red Lantern and thought it sounded horrible. I was worried when I saw he wrote JLD but I forgot by the time I read it. I try to stick it out for the characters I love even if I don't like the writing or art. But believe me I was close to dropping BG with Giffin/DeMatteis and I never thought I'd consider it with Booster.
ReplyDeleteJimmy: Sometimes writers surprise us. I think certain books click for them. Many have said they loved Batwing but hate Catwoman and their both from Winick. They have different tones.
Sally: I didn't hear that. Well I hope you enjoy it!
I'm sure you won't be surprised that I will buy any appearance of Booster Gold, no matter where he is. But there aren't any other characters that have earned that level of my loyalty still appearing in DC comics. (Captain Carrot or any member of his Zoo Crew, for example, would be an instant buy. But alas, no more funny animals.) I think following Batman for too many years through his zillion cameos finally burned that sort of cross-title shenanigans out of me for the most part.
